Having testicles removed

Hi everyone

My sprocker spaniel will be 6 in July.

I asked the vet when we first got him about having him done and they said there wasn't really any need to.

The older he gets the more I worry about things like testicular cancer etc.

Would he be too old to have the surgery now? I don't want to put him through pain for no good reason.

Any advice would be good.

Thank you x

Why would you if he’s not bolting after ladies ,or needing to be done for daycare , or getting into fights with other intact dogs ?

I can see the testicular cancer risk is zero if his balls are in a jar , but let’s face it they spend enough time displaying the Crown Jewels you’d notice a swelling 😂

DOI my wee chap is only 18 months and not done yet. Don’t think we will unless it becomes and issue.

Agree with PP. If you’re not seeing any aggression, urine marking, hormone issues etc. is it necessary? My vet once said “it’s a bit like removing a leg because you’re scared of him getting leg cancer” I know it’s not that simple but is the breed more susceptible to testicular cancer? I’d ultimately talk to your vet first, express your concerns.

You could just see how you go. If he needs another surgery for any reason, you could perhaps combine the 2 procedures?

Thanks everyone.

I asked this because my friend was shocked that he hasn't been "done" and now it's made me worry.

He's super loving, calming down now (still a crazy spaniel at times), loves kids and isn't territorial. I'd be lucky to get a bark out of him if somebody was breaking in 🙄😂

I will leave him, he has a full health check once a year anyway and they usually give his balls a good feel lol.
