How to phase out the puppy pen?

Peckypup has been sleeping in a large pen (space for basket, toys, mooching around) since we got him, and he's 10 months old now. We don't shut the door anymore and he's free to choose where he sleeps. Usually he starts off in the bedroom and then takes himself down to his pen.

I'd really like to get rid of the pen, it takes up masses of space and we've had to move furniture out of the kitchen to accommodate it. But he loves it in there (I think he views it as a walk-in toy box tbh).

He's a bit anxious, and gets very stuck into routines, so I don't know how to get rid of it without traumatising him! Any suggestions how to go about transitioning him to just sleeping in his bed?

What type of pen is it? If one of those made up of various sections clipped together, can you just remove a section at a time - so the pen effectively becomes more and more 'open plan' over a few weeks - until it's not really a pen at all?

Is his bed in the pen?

If not, can it be? Or can the pen move to surround his bed for a few weeks and progress as above?

Thanks @SirSniffsAlot that makes sense.
It's a repurposed Babydan. Not attached to a wall so it wouldn't stay upright if I took a section out. He's got the padded base in there, and his bed and his blanket on top of that (like the princess and the bloody pea Blush), so maybe if I left those in situ and took the actual pen walls away....

Worth a shot! Smile

I'd try just getting rid of it and seeing what his reactions like, he might surprise you. Our pup didn't seem to even notice when we got rid of the pen. It was so nice to have the space back!
