Has anyone’s puppy had a reaction to vaccinations?

What happened? I’m waiting in the vet car park. She had her second vaccinations today and is lethargic and panting. Has anyone else had this and it turned out ok?

It can happen, how long after vaccine? Its a bit like when we get our jabs we can feel rubbish afterwards. It will be ok x

Howmanysleepsnow · 03/03/2021 21:54

A couple of hours. She’s really wobbly.

You would expect an allergic reaction to happen sooner. Are you at the vets now?

Howmanysleepsnow · 03/03/2021 21:57

Yes. She’s inside, I’m in the car park

Not quite the same but ours went into delayed sort of shock about an hour after her jab. A bit like anaphylaxis, collapsed, unresponsive . Miles away from a vet. But on their instruction we fed her half an aspirin and she made a full recovery. Fingers crossed for your pup. It's very scary especially when they are tiny.

LEMtheoriginal · 03/03/2021 22:35

Ah thats good news

Howmanysleepsnow · 04/03/2021 00:42

So, she’s brighter but breathing fast. I’ve called the vet who said she’s ok and best off at home unless she’s vomiting/ straining for breath or unrouseable. It’s going to be a long night...

How is she this morning?

lurker101 · 04/03/2021 07:53

Ours did, to her second puppy jabs. It was horrendous, she was screaming in agony and shaking at home, a couple of hours after. She was taken to the vet, really unwell, and was given something by them to counteract the jab. She had to repeat her vaccinations a few months later.
Is your dog a small dog? I’ve heard this is more common in small dogs.

I would seriously rethink giving them. Screaming in agony- poor dog!
Howmanysleepsnow · 04/03/2021 08:04

She’s better again. I’ve been up with her every couple of hours and she got better as the night went on. Respiratory rate is back to normal and she seems nearly her normal self.
No, definitely not a small dog!

@Somethingkindaoooo it was horrendous! It wasn’t our regular vet at the time, we think something went wrong, but they “closed ranks”. Thankfully this was 7 years ago and she’s fine now, but it was awful at the time. She had separate vaccines after and was fine.

SlothMama · 04/03/2021 10:31

Did she have the L4 jab? It's been known to cause reactions in some dogs, in future if you have to vaccinate for lepto go for the L2 jab instead.

I hope she is back to her usual self soon!

Howmanysleepsnow · 04/03/2021 16:21

It was vanguard 7. Is that L4 or L2 or something else?

So has every vaccine ever made - all drugs have side effects. L4 side effects are well within established ranges and there is no evidence from reporting channels that there are excessive problematic reactions. The only 'evidence' comes from hysterical FB groups Hmm

FYI vanguard 7 is usually reconstituted with an L2 vaccine active only against Leptospira canicola and Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae

Which kind of undermines your attempt at scaremongering on this thread

My whippet had a terrible reaction to the Lepto vaccine. In front of our eyes lumps came up all over him and he struggled to breathe. The vet had to give him an antihistamine very quickly. He was fine by the next day but it was really scary .

Hm2020 · 06/03/2021 19:12

My dog had a seizure 24hours after her vaccinations I walked in to find her on her back arms out stiff and eyes rolling back completely unresponsive this was 11 years ago can’t remember what vaccine it was she spent 3 days in the vet but actually was fine vet put it down to her size when she got the vaccine she was a Yorkie but the runt of litter and weighed 1.5lbs she had no lasting effects though
