Dog fighting

I just saw another post on Facebook about a stolen dog. I'm seeing more and more dogs stolen and sometimes not ones you'd think could be sold on. I assume they're stolen for dogfighting Sad
It made me wonder how you'd even get calm, well socialised family pets to fight each other?
Maybe I'm naive but I've got an unfixed male and he just wants to play with other dogs.

Whatever they are being used for, I'm sure it's not as fighters!

shouldistop · 01/03/2021 14:53

The latest dog i saw was quite an elderly lady. What would be the point in stealing a dog like this? It's horrible Sad

People are paying silly money for per dogs at the moment, due to lockdown. Certain breeds are being targeted, but if the opportunity presented itself, a thief would have nothing to lose. Sell it on if possible (for whatever purpose) and dump if not Sad

It's horrible isn't it. Ddog isn't allowed out in the garden alone just now, one reason being is that I don't want him being territorial but the other is that he's a young unfixed poodle cross and I'm worried he'll be stolen.

It makes me sick. The ones you refer to op will be used as bait, not to actually fight, if that's why taken. So to wind up the fighting dog, test a dogs instinct, maul or kill in process.

shouldistop · 01/03/2021 15:07

@brokengate oh god I didn't think about bait Sad that poor old girl. Utter bastards.

How can anyone be entertained by that??

I wouldn’t presume they’re not being sold on tbh...

I’ve seen adverts selling pretty elderly mongrels (I don’t mean designer crosses) for about £500 2 years ago you could get KC registered puppies for that.

It’d be pretty easy money.

I’m also not convinced all the stolen dog posts on Facebook are real either.

Besom · 01/03/2021 16:12

I think people sometimes say they've been stolen when they don't want to admit they ran off.

tabulahrasa · 01/03/2021 16:41

Well I’m sure you do get people who know full well they’re lost rather than stolen.

But I more mean, I kind of suspect there are a lot of people who jump to the stolen conclusion rather than, it got out - I’m seeing huge amounts of found dogs, on Facebook, in real life.. I’ve returned two myself in the last few weeks and I don’t even tend to be where other dogs are. I don’t know if it’s people out of normal work routines leaving dogs in gardens more, or newer inexperienced dog owners... or both? But it’s definitely happening a lot more.

It’s also a thing that ex partners try to track people down with stolen dog posts.

And some of any type of Facebook posts are fake and just clickbait anyway.

Definitely. I see a lot of posts on Facebook saying "dog stolen from the garden" and it later turns out someone left the gate open.

There are LOTS of posts on social media about "stolen dogs" but I suspect a good number of them are untrue. Our local police have reported on one dog theft from the area this year, but according to Facebook there's at least 2-3 a day!

shouldistop · 01/03/2021 17:03

It's kind of a relief that a lot of the posts may not actually be stolen dogs. I had noticed a big increase in it lately

I think there is an increase in theft but I don't think there's anywhere near the amount that's publicised.

It's always important to remember that anyone can write anything on Facebook. I pay attention to posts from official sources - local police pages, rescue centres and the RSPCA, for example. Not posts from Jane Smith down the road who claims that 15 dogs have been stolen from X park in the last week.
