I have posted before but can’t find it. I’ve been researching breeds for over a year now so feel like I’m well prepared.
I’m actually waiting for confirmation from landlord (council) that we’re allowed a dog so still nothings concrete. I might be allowed based on children’s mental health needs.
Narrowed it down to:
Cavalier (health issues I know)
Cavapoo
Shih tzu
Westie
Open to suggestions. Not a rescue.
Kids are 8 and 15. Generally my household is pretty calm but youngest can be quite energetic and loud at times. Would be great company for a dog that loves to run around a park. Oldest would like a cuddle buddy.
On an average day probably an 60 mins walks a day split between 3 walks (2 short ones). More at weekends. I guess realistically we need a lower energy breed as we wouldn’t meet high exercise needs in the week but I wouldn’t want a dog that isn’t able to cope with a couple of hours round a park. This is what’s worrying me about a shih tzu.
I love westies but I don’t have much experience of terriers.

Any first hand experience of these breeds? What they’re like with children? Exercise needs?

The thing is with a lower energy breed like a shih tzu it’d be much easier for my mum to take care of them. I know of people that manage to work with them with a dog Walker for an hour in the afternoon.
It’s so tough and there’s no breed that will just slot in to our lives. Well of course have to compromise and make adjustments.
I’ve read Llasa’s are not great for novice owners. I think out of those breeds a shih tzu would definitely be better for us.

Id happily inbox/PM you. a photo but don't seem able too do you know how too do it?
He's black and very slightly over size the size required for the show ring of 15". his clip makes him look like a miniature curly coated retreiver its very low maintenance.
Ive been round animals all my life cattle sheep horses dogs etc I treat my dogs like dogs I loathe the term "furbasbies" I personally don't believe that dogs are not babies in fury suits when ever I see the term furbaby I want to scream "its not a baby its a bloody dog". We have high expectations of behaviour we expect our dogs to be well behaved at all times and also adapt to their situation. I also believe that your dog mimics you we are a happy out going welcoming family and our dogs have always been the same. We have always chosen dog breeds very carefully I personally don't like deformities like squashed faces or bug eyes, I want to let dog off a lead, I want a dog that wants to please you and do the right thing, work with you and we've always looked at breeds that will work for us and our current situation. You're right to research carefully and then talk carefully to reputable breeders, good breeders will only want to sell a dog into a home where both the dog is going to be happy and settled and its new home feel that they have good the right dog that fits their requirements.
Everyone will have their personal favourites and things that they want and don't want I love schnauzers but I know they yap and I wont have a yapping dog, I don't particularly like terriers too independent and all those husky type dogs in my opinion are bred to pull sledges and thats what they should be doing not living in a two bed flat in a city, we have friends who breed and train malenois I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole partly because I don't need to bring a burglar down.Having been round boarder collies as a child/young adult I wouldn't own one of them either unless I had a couple of thousand sheep to check every day.
I don't know anything about the current situation with poodle puppies; how long you would have to wait but I do know that its worth waiting for the right dog from the right breeder what ever breed you choose.
Good luck I hope you find the right dog for you.

"Poodles often have sensitive tummies and can be very fussy eaters"
Ive never heard this mine eats a mid priced dried food but would happily eat tin food (but I don't like it), he gets the rind of the bacon occasionally, uncooked chicken wings when we have chicken and traditionally anything left over from Sunday dinner including the veg. We have always as treat given all our dogs the rind of the parmesan. He's definitely not fussy or has a sensitive tummy.
I think it's all about breeding reputable dedicated breeders with years of experience and knowledge of their breed breed healthy dogs.

@HeyLala

Have a look at the Cavachon breed. My little one is just coming up to a year in March. He is adorable. He would be a great dog for kids. Has been easy to train, easy to walk. Bursts of energy but also likes to sleep at your feet during the day whilst I'm working or on calls. Needs a face trim once a month.
My neighbour has two Cavachons (bichon mixed with King charles cavalier) one is 12 & the other is 14 & both still going strong. They are the most adorable pair, so gentle, so affectionate & obidient... We have known them since they were puppies...

I have a cavalier, cavapoo and miniture dachshund.

The Cavalier is amazing temperament wise and likes to sit on our laps but isn't very 'cuddly' she does love being with us but isn't 'needy' so will happily settle in her own bed. Fantatic with children and will walk as little or as much as you like. Isnt barkey but will woof Grin she was very easy to train thanks to her food drive however isn't very intelligent bless her, shes abit of a nutter especially through woodland. She loves our children and people on general.

The cavapoo is her daughter, we had every single breed specific health test done with
her mum and the stud had been highly tested too above and beyond the breed recommendations for both. She is fantastic temperament wise, very cuddly and loves being with us. She's incredibally intelligent unlike her mum Grin thanks to the poodle. She's incredibally characterful and a fantastic little dog all round really. Only negative is the coat maintenance really. She's very playful and the children adore her!

I have a border terrier, she's been an absolute dream. Loves her walks, but very chilled, happy to potter about with me, if I'm up she's up, if I'm chilling she's chilling. She has a cracking personality, feisty, stubborn yet funny and loving with a gentle loving nature.
