A friend of mine and her boyfriend bought a puppy last year. A cockapoo. Lovely dog, no trouble, happy to be left home alone for 7 hours a day, which they did at least twice a week.

Fast forward 12 months and they've now split. She's keeping the dog, he's 'devastated'. Their solution? Breed her so that he can have a puppy. Am I wrong in thinking this is a horrible idea? Why would you put a dog who you apparently love so much through the risks of pregnancy and birth?

They know nothing about breeding!

Fucking idiots!

PugInTheHouse · 27/02/2021 08:31

Awful. I dont think anyone on here would agree its a good idea. In RL I think lots of people would think its the perfect idea. So many people have said to me its a shame you didn't get a girl so you could breed from it etc. A few have said they are surprised we are considering getting him neutered so we can use him to breed.

somethinginthewater · 27/02/2021 09:32

Wrong on every level.
If they go ahead with this madness who will look after a litter of puppies all day while she's at work?
BTW no dog is 'happy' being left alone for seven hours.

Douchebaggette · 27/02/2021 09:34

They both sound like dicks from the start, tbh. The breeding is the shit icing on an already awful cake.

Chunkymenrock · 27/02/2021 09:40

There is no way on earth they should be doing this. They sound like vacuous idiots. There are enough dogs around without randomly breeding more without any knowledge, thought or care. By the way, I'm disgusted to read that she is regularly left for 7 hours alone. That is extremely cruel. Dogs need company, stimulation and attention. A few hours alone, fine. 7 is appalling.

Floralnomad · 27/02/2021 09:49

The breeding her has nothing to do with them splitting up that was the likely intention from the start . I would imagine that numerous purchasers of puppies from last year , who paid the inflated prices will be doing likewise so they not only recoup their outlay but also make some money . It’s shit , it’s not right , it’s not fair on the poor dogs involved but it’s going to happen and will continue to happen until people stop buying fluffy cross breeds from unscrupulous morons for mega money .

Whywhywhy48 · 27/02/2021 09:54

They sound like iddiots! There is a lot to think about when breeding dogs. Honestly so selfish .

stampsurprise · 27/02/2021 11:40

Mad and also illogical given that the pup could be nothing like its mother In terms of personality.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 27/02/2021 11:46

YANBU, but the grief of a serious relationship ending can do funny things to people's heads. Hopefully they'll see sense before they actually go ahead.

Tulipsy272 · 27/02/2021 12:41

I do agree that the plan was to breed from her all along, I heard him comment that it would buy him a new car.

I'm so pissed off and my protests just fall on deaf ears.

It's disgusting but unfortunately it'll happen and there's nothing that can be done to stop people like this.

Why anyone would breed just so they can have another dog that's left alone for 7 hours a day is beyond me.

UhtredRagnarson · 27/02/2021 14:36

I don’t know what it is but I’ve yet to meet or read about a cockapoo owner that wasn’t thick.

LApprentiSorcier · 27/02/2021 14:41

They might have trained their dog not to bark/destroy the house but I doubt she was actually happy to be left alone for 7 hours a day on a regular basis. OK as a one-off if unavoidable but no way for a dog to live in the long term.

EveryoneRevealsThemselves · 27/02/2021 14:46

Yeah they are absolute arseholes.

This kind of thing makes me so angry.

Tulipsy272 · 27/02/2021 15:14

My 'happy to be left for 7 hours' comment was sarcastic. Poor wee pup. Just because it doesn't cry and bark doesn't mean its happy. Its destroyed skirting boards, wiring, chair legs and it wees on its bed.

Not surprised at all to hear this. Sad
ooohbriefcase · 27/02/2021 15:22

Doesn't even make sense. He's so devastated he's losing the dog so he wants a puppy from the dog.
So essentially a different fucking dog. He literally might as well just buy another cockapoo that's already been born.

Maybe we should just be grateful they are not having the dog cloned.
blowinahoolie · 27/02/2021 17:10

Toss a coin and see who keeps dog. The loser can have a cuddly toy dog.

Seriously, terrible idea to breed for this reason alone🤦

pilates · 27/02/2021 17:16

🤦‍♀️
What a depressing thread . It makes my blood boil.

Happytentoes · 27/02/2021 18:16

Wow, I am not surprised that you are angry. She’s too young to breed and it is such an irresponsible thing to do on a whim. Poor dogs.

Corncorncorn · 28/02/2021 08:36

She's not happy to be left alone for 7 hours. That's awful.
