Zoomies

Our 7 month cocker spaniel tends to have zoomies in the evening, I'm wondering how we should react to them. The kids cheer him on but to me it seems like he can't control it and looks crazy, almost scared. So I tell the kids to stop. Do dogs enjoy zoomies?

I gave mine an enforced time out to sleep. They are like an overtired overstimulated toddler when they have zoomies so no I don't think they enjoy them as they just don't have the maturity to control themselves and sleep.

My 8 month cockapoo is crazy for zoomies - especially after a walk

She looks demented but definitely happy. I think it is burning off excess energy and having fun. I read that only happy dogs do Zoomies...not sure if it is true.

As long as the kids feel safe I would let it continue

Mine is 8 and has the zoomies if she’s not walked enough.

Just to put this in context. Mine is now 4 years old and sometimes gets overstimulated and rather than full on zoomies he does a bit of one and calms himself down and goes off to sleep. He doesn't want to be fussed or played with. He just wants to be left alone to sleep.

My current cocker doesn't really have them but my last one did. I never thought she was unhappy during them.
My DP's Great Dane has them v occasionally, that's fun to watch if it's inside!

I have 2 spaniels, aged 13 and 7. They still have zoomies, mostly outdoors when they come back from a walk. They are very well exercised. Generally I find it funny to watch, we have a big garden so as long as they don’t wreck the flower beds I’m not too worried. The younger one (sprocker) sometimes does it in the house. She has been known to fly in the back door, skid on the doormat through the kitchen and then do the wall of death around the sitting room. It’s really quite spectacular to watch. My kids are 10, they are well drilled in “stand still, the dog’s going crazy”. I’ve also had lurchers and they used to do it too. I’ve always associated it with happy exuberance!

Mine is 8 and still Zoomies round the house when I come in 🥰

Welcome to spaniel life Grin our sprocker loves the zoomies, exercise levels make no difference to hers she does it when she’s excited for whatever reason and does the wall of death round the sitting room when the kids come home because she loves them so much!

My 7 month old spaniel is partial to zoomies every evening. Tonight however, he's mostly chasing his tail again and again and again and again and again and again and again.......

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 08/02/2021 20:29

My 19 year old dog still had zoomed. Fortunately it was outside and used to be even worse when it snowed. He wasn't a spaniel either. Grin

Our 2 spanners are 7 and 2......... we get zoomies after walks, after baths, after food, when visitors arrive...........

It's just something that spaniels do, I think!

Not to be confused with the evening "witching hour" that comes with puppies, which is generally down to overstimulation and not knowing what to do with themselves Grin
