Maggie is OBSESSED with washing machines and tumble dryers. She will stand in front of them when they're on, watching the washing going round. She can't even see anything when the tumble dryers on as it's not a glass door, but she still watches it. When she sees us coming down to the kichen with washing she turns and runs back to he kitchen to watch the machine. She ''helps'' us load and unload them, and can actually close the dryer door for us. When we were on holiday in self catering, she watched the machine there too.

She 'bites' the hot air coming from a hair dryer.

She is totally and absolutely obsessed with playing bubbles. She gets a great exercise routine and will run after them and jump at them. All the kids up our local park know her and love her....when I go up there, there's loads of kids saying ''Mummy, there's Maggie playing bubbles'' and she loves it when kids join in with her.

So what quirks does your dog have that make you laugh and love them?

Mine loves wrecking cardboard boxes and will hold a bit in his mouth and rush about shaking the box madly until he's shredded it into small bits. He believes that Amazon exists just to bring him a box. Sometimes it's hard getting him to wait until it's unpacked before he rushes off with it. He also believes that in a bowl of his biscuits (all identical) some are Mat Biscuits and some are Carpet Biscuits. You must eat the mat biscuits on the mat by the door (carrying them there from the bowl several feet away). Most are mat biscuits. However if you find a carpet biscuit this must be taken to the carpet in the other room to eat. We can't tell the difference between mat biscuits and carpet biscuits, but he can.

@Historydweeb No, he’s a spaniel. I’m glad to hear I’m not alone! It’s very embarrassing.

Santaiscovidfree · 06/02/2021 14:49

Not sure if it's classed as a quirk but whenever I do any diy or such they have to be there... Painting ds's room with 2 assistants isn't easy!!

Our little chocolate lab size of a small donkey is OCD, enjoys card board boxes, kills plastic bottles and enjoys chewing kitchen roll, Once spent two days wandering round the house with a pair of wool gloves in his mouth.
Loves his toys but expects DS to carry the toys back upstairs every night.
We all love him.

Fourcolourpens · 06/02/2021 15:57

Mine totally buries himself under his duvet to sleep, as in we can’t see any part of him! I used to get worried he would suffocate himself and take the duvet off, but he would just get back under. He is 9 now so I guess he is safe enough.

He is obsessed with a certain toy and takes it everywhere in the house. He tries to take it for a walk but we take it off him in case he looses it.

He loves watermelon and orange melon, but not green melon or mango

He gets really excited crossing the road, jumps around and when we tell him to, runs across and jumps up the kerb on the other side with a very exuberant bounce.

Love him so much, he was a rescued stray, 10ish months old when we got him. He was in a bad way when he was found, I am so glad we gave him a good life.

Voldethought · 06/02/2021 18:53

Mine barks at anyone who has the audacity to go for a country walk WITHOUT a dog. It’s as if she can’t see the point of their walk.
She’s also terrified of strange two headed people a.k.a. parents who carry their toddler on their shoulders.

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/02/2021 19:48

Mine barked furiously at a neighbour's car which had one of those tarpaulin covers on. I had to drag her away.

Exactly the same with the one toy obsession. Its a fairly new thing for us as we only bought the toy a week or so ago. If she hadn't been spayed I would have worried it was a phantom pregnancy!

Our food hating puppy will eat... if fed off a spoon!

MaddeningtheUnhelpful · 06/02/2021 22:04

my dog watches TV. She cries for me to put it on. She also doesn't lick because she thinks she's a cat so just nose nudges, she also doesn't realise that she doesn't need to purr like the cats do when she's being stroked. Honestly there's no aggression in her, she will snuggle up to you herself and be growling very lightly as a 'purr' Confused

ladygindiva · 06/02/2021 22:06

Mine likes a treat ( usually a tripe stick twiglet thing) of an evening and will not touch it till DP has nudged it with his foot once. Then he runs off, buries it under some cushions then digs it out and eats it. His ritual.

Ellmau · 07/02/2021 01:27

*StillMedusa

Mine barks at disabled people blush Or anyone who walks 'funny' in her furry mind
It's horribly embarrassing!!

...
Mine does that including people with Downs Syndrome or Alzheimers.*

We had one like that when I was a child. It was particularly unfortunate bc at the time we lived near a residential home for people with learning difficulties and often encountered residents on walks. My DM was mortified, thinking they would think we had taught DDog to behave that way.

Spidey66 · 07/02/2021 11:54

These stories are great. Love all these quirky dogs!

There's a dog up our local park, another collie, who loves playing football and will get involved in any kick about. A lot of people appear happy to indulge if they're just having a kickabout with the kids. Out of lockdown "proper" games are played e.g. local teams for kids and also Aussie rules so I think the owner has to keep her on a lead then. Another collie chases skateboards. I think it's a collie thing, and is why they're trained to chase sheep.

Polly looks the most mean as she hardly has any teeth!

RedHelenB · 08/02/2021 11:01

@NaturalBlondeYeahRight mine does that with his dog biscuits. He has a plastic bowl for his water and when it's empty he bats it around with his paws and then drops it at our feet.

Allington · 08/02/2021 15:13

The first biscuit in the bowl is always a Carpet Biscuit for DDog. It has to be carried into the living room, dropped on the carpet, sniffed, picked up again and eaten. All the following biscuits can be scoffed down straight away.

If she gets given a treat it has to be taken upstairs, under my bed. Then she can put it down, sniff it, nudge it a few times, and eat at her leisure. She also likes doing the same in the middle of the night with stray apple cores (DD likes a pre-bed apple and tends to leave the core on her bedside table), but with a lot of nudging and crawling about on her elbows to 'chase' it.

KarmaNoMore · 08/02/2021 15:19

Mine jumps as if she wanted to press the button on pedestrian crossings. She is a rescue, no idea how this came to be.

In other aspects she is very much like a cat, she eats like a cat, she won’t play with dogs toys but give her a feather on a stick and she loves it.

Oh and she talks on her sleep, all the time.

toomanydoghairs · 08/02/2021 15:44

If my Ddog is given any 'special' food (ie anything other than his usual dogfood) he immediately dashes in to the living room with it to eat in on his bed. If his bed has been moved, or we close the living room door he will look around for something similar to a bed to eat it on (door mat/dog towel/clothing). He's a rescue dog so I don't know if he thinks he's claiming the special food as his own.

Possibly the oddest thing about this is that 'special' food includes leftover carrots, peas and especially cabbage. He does not pester for food when I am cooking other than for cabbage and he will steal cabbage (but nothing else) given half a chance.

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/02/2021 20:31

Mine has carpet biscuits as well. When she was given a biscuit in the pub she stood with it in her mouth looking confused then took it to the door mat to eat.

Allington · 09/02/2021 09:53

Dogs will always make a fool of you.

This morning both Biscuit 1 and Biscuit 2 were Carpet Biscuits...

MaitlandGirl · 09/02/2021 10:02

Our youngest will slap you with his front paw until you hold hands with him while he goes to sleep. He’s ok after about 20mins when he rolls over but he likes to hold hands when he goes to sleep.

He also likes to ‘chat’ when he eats - he eats a few biscuits, looks at you and woofs, waits for you to woof back then eats a few more biscuits. This goes on for the whole meal.

He also barks like a lunatic until you get to 80km/ph. Anything slower and he’s not happy.

longtompot · 09/02/2021 22:44

Mine is racist too. She once chased a black lady around a park bench as I think she thought she had food. She has never done this to anyone else before or since.
She also barks at my ds when he speaks to her in a foreign language, esp German and Japanese. I think this is more out of frustration of not understanding what he is saying.
My friends dog was disableist and barked at people in wheelchairs. It was rather more embarrassing as she worked with disabled people!

That is adorable! What is your dog as I am picturing a collie sized one and my ed is picturing a smaller dog?
