Our lovely goldie was spayed this morning and we just collected her. She is a nervous timid little thing by nature but this has been magnified ten fold since she came home. She is very distressed by the cone and is just standing there refusing to move. We have a small house and she is finding it difficult to get around with the cone catching on everything. I feel so guilty and worried Sad

Get her a body suit . Mine wore on for 3 days. She will be groggy

Can you phone your vets for one. I got one of mine online and one from my vet.

Aloethere · 02/02/2021 16:11

You could try here? Mine is getting spayed at the end of the week and your post has just reminded me I wanted to get one.

Vet only supplies the plastic cone unfortunately. Her care letter also states that she need to keep the cone on until she gets the stitches removed in ten days . Will check out that website now @Aloethere

Just to say as well when we got our male dog done we didn't subject him to the cone when we were around to make sure he didn't go at his stitches because he really hated it. In the end between the lot of us we managed to keep a close enough eye on him that it wasn't needed. I noticed petstop have some of the vests as well if you have one near you they do click and collect.

I hope she is ok, our dog is really nervous too(not to mention dramatic!) so I'm not looking forward to it at all!

I put a t-shirt on my bitch when she was spayed. Back legs through the arm holes and then think I tied to the loose fabric with a hairband. Or you can get a comfy collar which is an inflatable collar.

A pet shirt is basically just a baby grow / vest with a tail hole Grin

If you have trouble sourcing a proper shirt, I’d just go to a supermarket and get a pack of baby grows in the largest size.

My pup was very cold afterwards and slept on me to warm her up, she still wasn’t right the day after so I got in touch with the vet. She needed some stronger pain relief as she was a sensitive little thing. So get in touch with your vet if she is struggling. The pain meds helped mine and she recovered fine once she started on it.

StillMedusa · 02/02/2021 17:56

Mine was very disorientated and distressed the first night after being spayed. I stayed by her side all night and she didn't eat or drink or pee. Next day she finally peed and ate a little . Cones are awful.. if you can't get a body suit I'd make my own... a slim fit t shirt.. pair of soft shorts and safety pin them together (take off shorts for toileting!) The first time I met my puppy her Mum looked like a 80' fitness video reject as she had to stop feeding th puppies (vets advice as she had a painful teat) so was sporting hot pants and a t shirt... did the trick!
She'll probably feel a lot better in a day or two :)

MamaTT · 02/02/2021 18:01

Oh bless her.
My vet didn’t have the baby grow thing either so I phoned another local vet and they were happy to sell me one so that could be worth a try.
My girl had a really bad time and had a big bleed whilst she was in theatre. Very weak for a few days. I slept on a mattress on the dining room floor with her for a few nights.
If you think she’s struggling tomorrow, call the vets as they can prescribe additional pain relief.
My dog refused food for a day or two and would only drink water if I syringed it into her mouth. Was awful. I have another puppy arriving next month and I’m already dreading spaying her.

Aw. Don't forget that standing still will be exactly what she needs to be doing, so that her wounds can heal. I think the main problem here is your feeling of guilt, rather than you having something to feel guilty about, if you see what I mean. She will be delicate and sore. She just needs you to be calm and peaceful and present.

BeTheHokeyMan · 02/02/2021 18:37

Thank you all for your replies they are very much appreciated Flowers. We managed to get a soft collar and she is finding it much better and easier. She had a big drink of water with me holding the bowl up to her and then again a few minutes later as normal out of the bowl on the ground. Has been out twice to wee and poop so that's good too. My daughter is now home from work and much calmer than me so she has made a bed in her room and doggy is fast asleep there now . Fingers crossed she will continue to improve . It's such a worry , so many around me were against her being spayed and I didn't want something to happen and for them to say " told you so" .
