Recovery after neuter

Can anyone talk me through recovery after neuter as my dog had it done yesterday and not been through this before. He had a retained testical (in groin) so it was slightly more invasive than standard neuter. He came home yesterday afternoon in a surgical suit to stop him chewing stitches, was drowsy to start with, but by the evening was walking around, trying to play and seemed quite lively. This morning he doesn’t want to walk, even for treats. I took him outside first thing and he went to the toilet, but since then has just laid in the hall. He sits up and is eager for food, but won’t walk. Is this normal? He usually has a low pain threshold....eg won’t walk if a twig is stuck to his fur or similar but worried he has gone backwards since yesterday.

He’s probably more sore today with the anaesthetic worn off. He needs to be kept quiet for a few days.

Mine had a standard op and was quiet for a day then back to normal. Just keep an eye on the wound and contact the vet if you’re worried by anything. If he’s still quiet in a day or two then maybe get advice from vet.

I agree with pp, he will be feeling it more now the anesthetic has worn off and he will probably be swolen and bruised now. Definitely rest him for a week or so, dont let him do anything too strenuous like running around and playing. Keep the wound clean and dry. Shirt lead walks only. My dog was back to normal after about 4 days but I still made him take it easy for a further few days to be on the safe side!

Thanks both, since posting I’ve taken him out on the lead to the toilet a few times and he’s moving ok when the vest is unclipped. He hates coats or clothes of any sort so it might be he just doesn’t like the vest! Makes sense that he will be sore today I guess, a bit like when I had my c section.

It was a good few days for our dog. Day one he was totally out of it. I was quite surprised. Advised not to walk him for a few days to keep wound clean -Especially as it so muddy. We had an inflatable Collar for About 5 days. Day four he was back to normal.
