@Plantlover23 that's great the the heel walking was positive. What has your trainer taught you to do for heel? Because the method our trainer taught us isn't working so I think we need to try something new!
I meant @Petalpup!

MyRabbit79 · 25/02/2021 08:53

We've had our first emergency vet call this morning. Pup ate a bit of chewing gum on his walk this morning with partner. Partner called vet and they said not to bother bringing him in, just collect some charcoal to put in his food so I'm waiting for him to get back with that now. Feel so bad for them both, partner was distraught. Pup is fine so far but am keeping a close eye on him.

MaryIsA · 25/02/2021 09:02

Chewing gum is different. But I remember panicking in Pets at Home about having bought 'dog' treats rather than 'puppy treats' before the puppy arrived.

The nice young lad grinned and said 'just wait till you see what they'll eat when they are out!' - horse poo, rabbit poo, dead mice...

Petalpup · 25/02/2021 09:41

It’s luring her in a little circle behind and then rewarding when she’s in the right position beside me. Do that a lot and then walk in a circle rewarding while she’s next to me.
Fine in the house. Let’s see what taking it to the garden and beyond brings.
She was very much of the opinion that we shouldn’t be letting her practise pulling at all.
So I’m now wondering if, for a bit of a shortcut we invest in a halti or something for the meantime? I’m sure this would be a no no!

Doje · 25/02/2021 11:08

Oh my goodness, loose lead walking is driving me bonkers! We've been practising almost every day. Can anyone tell me when their pup cracked it? And what method you used? We go out sometimes and he's ok, and then other times he's a nightmare! I think he knows what to do, he just gets carried away.

MyRabbit79 · 25/02/2021 12:50

@MaryIsA yes we're starting to realise how many non-food items he's likely to eat! We're being relatively relaxed about most things except raisins, chewing gum, chocolate and poisonous plants. But he is determined to put everything in his mouth and if it's something he really wants he won't give it up. Partner dropped kibble to make him drop the gum and he wolfed the lot down together.

PugInTheHouse · 25/02/2021 13:44

@MyRabbit79 I'm sure you've seen my many posts about pugpup eating stuff. Does rabbitpup know a drop it cue? This only seems to work for us for stuff he doesn't actually want to eat still though, we are now working on leave it for everything that is on the floor,I am practicing by dropping blueberries. The hope is that he will look to me to check before eating. I fear I am not going to crack it but I've got to try.

We can often entice with a treat but we don't drop them, we hold it in our hands so he opens his mouth near us, generally he will drop it (if stone or a leaf) but if it's something dangerous then we can then retrieve it. It didn't work for the caterpillar, snail or squashie but did for the chewing gum and other stuff.

MyRabbit79 · 25/02/2021 14:51

@PugInTheHouse yes I've seen your posts about your pup, they sound similar! We've taught him give and leave it but like you say, he'll only do it if he wants to. We will carry on though as he may get better. It works with stones, leaves and twigs but not with anything more tempting so far. When he's in the garden he's been digging up entire plants and no treat is delicious enough to stop him so far.

PugInTheHouse · 25/02/2021 14:59

@MyRabbit79 yep they sound so similar. I am hoping perseverance will pay off, I am not sure what will work if not. He's stopped picking anything up on walks, its just at home/garden now.

Sparkle79 · 25/02/2021 15:13

@MyRabbit79 @PugInTheHouse we have whistle trained Sparklepup and he gets a piece of cheese when he comes to the whistle. It's the only time he ever gets cheese and he gets it every time. At the moment if he's in the garden eating something he shouldn't, I blow the whistle and he bolts indoors to get his cheese and drops whatever it is. DH thinks its rewarding him for being naughty and thinks he'll start eating something he shouldn't just to get some cheese, which I agree with to an extent, however at the moment I'd rather have something I know is 99% guaranteed to get him to spit out something dangerous. Might be worth a try?

Sparkle79 · 25/02/2021 15:20

@Doje I feel your pain. I'll let you know when we figure it out. For now we're just stopping every time he pulls but it's not sinking in yet.

PugInTheHouse · 25/02/2021 15:21

@Sparkle79 I have never given him cheese, it will be a dream for him haha. Pugpup definitely picks things up in order to get a treat but the trainer said once they understand what you are asking them to do then just treat every other or every 3rd time so they won't know when you will so will likely drop it just in case. I will give it a go.

Hello all, I have not posted for ages! I have a puppy working lab retriever, he is short of 5 months now and always been on the timid side, although he has come out of his shell with training. This last week he had a very worried body language when I took him to local park and I am not sure what to do to lure him to walk there! Tried treats , etc but took forever! I am not sure why he has started acting like that ... anyone with similar experience?
Btw- I took him for a walk in the car first into town abs he was fine, the issue seemed to be more walking from my house .

MyRabbit79 · 25/02/2021 17:22

@Sparkle79 that sounds great! I've heard about whistles being good to

MyRabbit79 · 25/02/2021 17:23

Posted too soon as pup jumped on me! Whistles are meant to be great aren't they, maybe I'll try. Pup loves cheese too, we use primula for recall.

Plantlover23 · 25/02/2021 19:13

All these loose lead walking tips are incredibly helpful, I have a bank ready to go now for next time we go out! Thank you everyone

Silly emotional puppy parent moment today - got to daycare to collect Plantpup (two days a week is what we’re going for at the moment!) this evening at the same time as another owner. Her Labrador came bounding towards her for attention...my pup? Ran straight past me to the other lady Hmm Then noticed, jumped on my leg and ran off to play with her doggy friends!

This is building on the fact I’m absolutely convinced she loves everyone more than me as she wags her tail like mad for them but never me! Secretly hates me? Perhaps!

SpreadHummusNotHate · 25/02/2021 19:56

First canine has fallen out today and I will definitely not be sorry to see the back of those pointy fuckers Grin - hoping this means my land shark transforms into a dog soon!

Plantlover23 · 25/02/2021 20:00

Woohoo great news @SpreadHummusNotHate!

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 25/02/2021 20:19

We were talking about this today, would I definitely notice GeorgiePup losing teeth? He’s 21 weeks (nearly 22) and I don’t think he’s lost any yet Confused

Doberwow · 25/02/2021 20:30

@SpreadHummusNotHate are you doing the whole tooth fairy thing and leaving a chew per tooth 😂

Doberwow · 25/02/2021 20:33

Has started hating the crate..... only been with us five nights, goes in the crate fine, settles, then at 1 am (previously 3am) is really unhappy.

We take her to the toilet, but she is really difficult to settle again (over an hour).

And advice please?

Sparkle79 · 25/02/2021 20:40

@Plantlover23 bless you. I'm sure it's because she loves you the most so feels secure enough to not make a fuss of you. That's what I tell myself when I pick my kids up from school anyway Grin Was her 2nd day just as good?

@SpreadHummusNotHate all uphill from here hopefully.

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat we've been wondering the same, no clue which have fallen out (if any) and which adult ones have come through. The amount of crao he eats I wouldn't be surprised if they fall out and he eats them

EmzBPupMum · 25/02/2021 20:41

Ok, so Pup is 4 1/2 months and is still having at least one accident (wee only) in the house. He does know what to do as will go to back door. I take him outside so often after every meal, training, playing, sleep. However at times he will just stop dead in house and just pee right in front of us! Sometimes I don't know how he can possibly have any wee left in him! Last night he went 3 times inside the house within the hour, but between then went outside as well. I am grateful it's only wees but was kinda hoping he might have got it by now. Anybody else's still having accidents?

SpreadHummusNotHate · 25/02/2021 22:09

This is the first tooth we’ve actually found. All the top and bottom ones at the front fell out around 16/17 weeks, we think she must have swallowed them all! With those ones though the adult tooth was through almost straight away so would be easy not to notice

@Doberwow where is the crate..? The first week or so my husband slept downstairs very close to the crate which I think helped. Night time wakings were as boring as possible, no lights on, no talking, toilet trip, back indoors and cuddle/settle back to sleep and pop back in crate (he is stricter than me Grin). It just takes them a while to settle into their new home Smile
