Portuguese Podengos

I have 2 teen boys and an 8yr old. We are keen to re home a dog and as we are in Portugal it's embarrassingly easy to do.

There are plenty of Portuguese Podengos, both full bred and crosses, either abandoned pets or ex-street dogs available and I'm wondering if they would make a good first dog in general.

If anyone has any particular info or personal knowledge on the breed it would be super helpful.

Thanks,

They're lovely but can sometimes be challenging. As hunting dogs that are often semi-free-roaming their recall and reliability can be unpredictable.

They're often pretty gentle dogs but can be fearful, sometimes reactive and difficult to train recall.

Having said that I'd have one - I like earning a relationship with a dog! Smile

Thanks Vetenari 🙂

I'm amazed (stupidly!) about how many there are here and I'd never heard of them before. I also seem to see lots of Galgos, on the sites which I wasn't familiar with either.

They can be small, medium and large and there is a lovely rough-coated one in a shelter near us but she was found on the the street so they don't know much about her background which seems a bit of a risk.

Our boy is amazing- a podengo cross. Mum is medium wirey podengo dad unknown (though we strongly suspect pointer x) He will walk all day or for 1/2 hour if that’s what you can spare (happened once but he was surprisingly good!) He is protective and loving and as soppy as anything. I can brush his teeth, clip his claws, examine his ears... He’s very trusting. He has whacking great paws that he likes to tread on is with or say hi with.

His prey drive is high but bells on his collar gives a warning that he’s on his way. We had a collie for 14 years who was our everything and we said never again! After 6 months we caved and I have to say, this one is far less complicated!
