Does anyone own rare native breed dog?

As the owner of a common-or-garden Labrador, who makes up for it by regularly being Best Dog ( oh yes he is, who’s best dog? Yes you are etc.), I’m a little starstruck by the glorious Otterhound who cheerfully ambles about our village, oblivious to her celebrity status. I also remember a gorgeous Cumber (?) Spaniel who attended the special class for naughty dogs that I frequented as a twelve year old with our rescue Staffie. Both rare and gorgeous things.

Anyone else care to share their rare native breed dog to enrich my fantasy of having a house full of them? Photos would be doubly marvellous.

Was it clumber spaniel you were thinking of? I remember seeing them at crufts one time being judged . Lovely dogs . Mine aren’t too rare- used to be popular years and years ago but now Shetland Sheepdogs are hard to find- especially a puppy!

It was indeed a clumber spaniel. He was brilliant but very naughty.

My aunt had a Shetland sheepdog in the seventies/ eighties. She was called Lassie of course. They are beautiful dogs but really quite rare now. Does yours’ need lots of grooming?

We live a few doors up from a Clumber. Very drooly Grin

Not lucky enough to own myself but I do dream of one day sharing my home with an Old English. Theyre so rare these days they're classified as endangered. I know a couple and they're absolutely fantastic dogs Star

@Mollymalone123, what’s your sheltie like? Good with children, would you say?
Funny enough a friend sent me a link to the Sussex spaniel yesterday, looked nice, it’s funny how some breeds become rare.

Mollymalone123 · 07/01/2021 23:34

@BoogleMcGroogle just quick brush few times a week- they keep themselves v clean- highly intelligent and loving.we go for a groom which is basically trim nails and keeping Bonnie in the photo a bit shorter under the belly as she has weak back legs and was recently diagnosed with doggy dementia at age 11.This is the two monkeys together

@2021willbetheyear we chose Shetland Sheepdogs because they are excellent with children- we also used to have a cat and we have chickens and rabbits- easy going but barks- ted though that was their job 😂 keeping birds off crops and keeping rats at bay. I have seen both ours kill rats that tried to get into chicken coop. Really took me by surprise as they are so ‘polite’ dogs 😂that’s the only time I have seen any aggression .This photo is when ted fell asleep Ona game board because when the grandkids are over he has to be with them or on top of them virtually- he adores children and cats 😂 the eldest grandchild has grown up with him and he sleeps at the foot of her bed when she stays over. He has really missed them because of COVID- Xmas day he could barely breathe when he saw them again 😂 he was so overexcited

We had a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, many, many moons ago. The breed was on the vulnerable list when we got her, not sure if they still are.

She was an absolute superstar, one of a kind and very different from the general view of them being absolutely bonkers, but then we put in A LOT of work with her, particularly over the first two years. She had her bronze, silver and gold good citizen awards by the time she was 18 months old, did agility, a bit of obedience and heelwork to music. Never happier than when we were training together, she would refuse to run and play in the park and throw htm moves at me instead. Grin She was a total show-off, loved the limelight and as much attention as she could get and we were constantly stopped when out an about, by people wanting to find out what breed she was.

In later life she used to love to go on camping holidays with dh, myself and our two young ds. My IL’s also used to beg to take her caravanning with them, as they adored her and regulars on the sites they visited were constantly asking when they would bring her along again.

We were lucky to have her until she was just over 14 and she had become a very sweet doddery old lady by then.

I don’t have many pictures of her on this computer, but have managed to find one of her at about 11/12 weeks, one at a few months old, maybe 16+ weeks-ish and one as an adult. The big guy alongside her as a pup was our Boxer x GSD and the pup in the final picture was our Belgian Terv x Border Collie rescue girl.

moosemama what a pretty little dog. I’ve heard of the breed but couldn’t recognise one. Nice that she lived to 14. Terriers are hardy little things.

I grew up with Irish Terriers, even the new vet when we moved house mistook his breed. After he died I remember my dad stopping the car in the middle of our holiday and running down the road asking if he could pat this strangers dog......yes it was an Irish.

Kndg · 08/01/2021 07:32

We have an OES and an elderly JRT.
Oes not on the vulnerable list but everyone always says oh you don't see those anymore. He's 4 and an absolute star, DS has sn and the dog is brilliant with him. Only downside is the grooming - takes me about 2 hours every few days and he goes to his groomer every 3 weeks. Oh and the clumsiness, he's forever knocking things over 😂
Our JRT is 12 and is the boss of the household. He's getting on now but still as feisty as ever.
Phone is not letting me add any photos grrr.

A Belton Blue Llewelyn English Setter with a split personality.

I own a working Clumber and several working springers

I don't recommend them for first time dog owners, they are loving and cuddly but very stubborn, strong willed, food obsessed arseholes lol

Lonecatwithkitten · 08/01/2021 07:46

My favourite rare breed is the Sussex spaniel - we had one as a child.

Splodgetastic · 08/01/2021 08:04

Don’t Shetlands have quite small litters? I remember watching a programme about puppies and it featured one called Colin who was the only one of his litter, so he had to be taken to visit other dogs as soon as he could so he could be doggy socialised. He was quite shy to start with and clingy to his mum, but had a nice nature.

Disfordarkchocolate · 08/01/2021 08:11

Matt Smith has an Irish terrier, a very handsome dog.

QueenBeth · 08/01/2021 08:16

We have an Otterhound - she's gentle, and rather magnificent with her big head and long feathery paws. Clever, too. Most people assume she's a Labradoodle.

People are linking non-vulnerable breeds

Is this thread about fantasy dogs in general, endangered breeds or vulnerable breeds?

The vulnerable breeds are listed in the link below - the 2020 numbers will be out soon, and rumour I’d that for at least one breed there were no puppies registered that year at all

www.thekennelclub.org.uk/getting-a-dog/are-you-ready/vulnerable-native-breeds/

I have a one if the vulnerable breed terriers - wonderful dog!

Knitwit99 · 08/01/2021 08:30

My gran used to have an Irish Water Spaniel. I don't think I have any photos though. She was such a big, soft cuddly lump of a dog but constantly bashing into things and knocking things over. People used to think at first look that she was some sort of poodle, they have similar looking coats, and she absolutely stank when she was wet.
I'm sad to see them on the endangered list, only 69 puppies last year.

Pugliandreamer · 08/01/2021 08:37

My grandmother used to raise Sealyhams, on the at risk dog breed list. She always went looking for a good quality puppy she could possibly breed frommand would, without fail, come home with the blind and deaf runt because she couldn't bear to leave them behind. She never ended up breeding! Lovely dogs full of character despite their disabilities!

Mollymalone123 · 08/01/2021 08:52

@Splodgetastic shelties normally have 2/3 pups and I think to have one is rare.they are incredibly hard to come by now. We got our old girl when she was 5 from France as she had been sent there to keep the gene pool going. Both mine are from show dogs so are small. The only thing that annoys me are when people do ‘ooh look it’s minituare Lassie’ 😂 -well no because that’s the very large beautiful Rough Collie- totally different breed

RandomMess · 08/01/2021 08:55

When I get my next dog I'll be look at the vulnerable breed list although I never particularly wanted to get a puppy but perhaps there will be a retired breeding girl or similar that someone needs to pass on which would help the breed out.

Justcashnosweets · 08/01/2021 08:56

This is a fab thread! I don't have vulnerable breed, I have a wonderful old Springer, but I have wanted a Dandie Dinmont Terrier for years. I've also considered a Clumber spaniel but after reading this I'm not so sure 😆

Justcashnosweets · 08/01/2021 09:00

@Kndg what is an OES?

RandomMess · 08/01/2021 09:05

Old English Sheepdog
