Does anyone own rare native breed dog?

As the owner of a common-or-garden Labrador, who makes up for it by regularly being Best Dog ( oh yes he is, who’s best dog? Yes you are etc.), I’m a little starstruck by the glorious Otterhound who cheerfully ambles about our village, oblivious to her celebrity status. I also remember a gorgeous Cumber (?) Spaniel who attended the special class for naughty dogs that I frequented as a twelve year old with our rescue Staffie. Both rare and gorgeous things.

Anyone else care to share their rare native breed dog to enrich my fantasy of having a house full of them? Photos would be doubly marvellous.

“Everyone seems to automatically assume he’s a Doberman“

Puppy? Please tell me they think he’s a Doberman puppy? Not a full grown one... rofl

Though I do know someone who gets asked if her Great Dane is a Dalmatian fairly often and there’s a pretty big size difference there too, lol

@alpinia

My local park is like crufts most days. It's fascinating. From the native breeds there is a lady with 3 clumbers, a lovely deer hound, a smooth fox terrier and a curly coat retriever that I'm completely in love with.

Other breeds seen this week two shar peis today, a woman with 5 Tollers yesterday, 2 seperate Great Danes, one harlequin coloured and a beautiful English pointer.

I love meeting them all and getting to know the different breeds.

5!! tollers!
alpinia · 09/01/2021 07:35

They came over the crest of a hill in a Toller conga line, one after the other. I wasn't sure there was an end! But the 5 Tollers were followed up by a JRT and a Dachshund, as I presume the Tollers just weren't enough energy for the owner.

They were definitely with the one owner. Occasionally I see some owners clubs walk in the park too. When my dog was a puppy we suddenly came upon 20+ Belgian Shepherds of the Tervuren variety. That was fun!

WTF0ver · 09/01/2021 09:38

Loving the photos of your gorgeous dogs! I saw a toller once while on a forest walk, I correctly guessed the breed, his family were impressed! Really missing having a dog, my parents lost their Springer a couple of years ago so no dogs to cuddle at all. Hoping to remedy that at some point, life's not the same without a dog in it.

BoogleMcGroogle · 09/01/2021 12:20

WTF0ver I completely agree with that sentiment. I took having dogs for granted growing up. We got our Lab when our kids were 8 and 11 and DH had never had dogs.

The other day, DH looked at the Labrahorror, a bit misty eyed and said ‘I can’t believe it took me 42 years to find out how brilliant having a dog is’. It really is a joy.

Saw this thread on active and would just like to say I've never owned a dog, likely never will, but I've very much enjoyed looking at all these pictures of your good dogs, so thank you for that Smile

In exchange I'd like to offer this picture of a friend's not very rare at all Retriever pup who has quite stolen my heart.

I have been wondering how the general rush to own dogs and especially puppies because of the pandemic will impact on our own and other vulnerable native and watched breeds.

thecapitalsunited · 09/01/2021 13:34

I have a Cardigan Welsh Corgi. He doesn’t have the correct coat but everyone thinks his long coat makes him even cuter. Less waterproof though and his belly is always soggy after a walk. They’re a big dog in a small package and can cope with just about anything you throw at them. Brilliant dogs.

@Oddgirlout

I’m really interested in getting a Welsh springer, we’ve been planning getting a dog for ages. Where should I look for one?
There is a FB group so worth asking on there or checking out breeders on the Kennel Club website.
Hm2020 · 09/01/2021 15:52

I grew up next door to an old English sheepdog he allways reminded me of an old man lovely dog but I remember him being huge.

Cherrypies · 09/01/2021 17:16

@Emberblu

We have a lovely 1 year old Irish Red and White Setter. He is in full teenage mode at the moment but really is a chilled out pup who is Brilliant with our toddler 😊 there are so few being bred in the UK now, the Irish red setter is much more popular (we had lots of these growing up) 🐕
Totally jealous of you, I lost my girl 6 years ago now, she was 10, devastated when she died. She was a Viewland pup, not sure if there are any about now. I just don't have the energy for them now. I wish you many great years with your boy.Wine
Funf · 10/01/2021 06:34

@darklane Yes we know about the Dandie shows hoping to be able to go some time in the future. Not many people know she is a dandy and we have only met 3 others one is Scotland. The Breeder grilled us too but we would rather have that than a dog go to a bad home, we set up and Instagram page for her, the breeder was delighted as she can see she gets looked after.
I would urge anyone looking for a dog to check the rare native breeds first rather than just rush out

BoogleMcGroogle · 10/01/2021 06:56

thecapitalsunited Corgis are rarely seen about here. Lovely little dogs. I know that they were bred for mountain sheep work so must be tough little things.

How is your Corgi different the ones the Queen keeps? Just a different colour or a completely different breed?

OHolyTights that’s an interesting points. I suppose, on the one hand, if there’s a general increase in dog ownership, that might spark an interest in rare native breeds. Especially some of the smaller ones. But the massive increase in designer crosses is an issue.

My concern is that so many of these breeds ( and my banana of a Labrador) are working dogs. With Labs there’s a fashion for slim, working strain Labs a a bit of a status symbol. They are seen as fat, friendly family dogs. But even the lardiest show-type needs stimulation to avoid behaviour issues ( most notably in a Lab, eating your house). I do hope that people choosing these breeds for the first time realise the breed-specific mental and physical stimulation they require.

Anyway, neither rare nor native. But here’s our boy doing what Labradors do best!

I have an Irish (or Tipperary) terrier, only one person I've met recognised the breed.
Sadly his breeder's stud dog died (he was quite upset that I'd had mine neutered) so that line is no more.
I've had a Manchester in the past.
There's two Afghans in the next village which are just beautiful.

whattodo2019 · 10/01/2021 09:45

My Aunt had a nova scotia duck tolling retriever. I have only ever seen a couple. She was gorgeous.

I have 2 welsh springer spaniels same as @TheGoodEnoughWife
They are amazing dogs will go out for miles or sleep all day. Amazing company

schmockdown · 10/01/2021 10:21

We've got a Cairn terrier, not rate but not many of them around. Everyone asks if he's a westie.

Next door neighbour has two tollersans other side has a bull terrier. We see a corgi pup on our walk every day, I think they are seriously underrated dogs.

BrassicaBabe · 10/01/2021 11:05

Loving the photos on this thread. 💕

thecapitalsunited · 10/01/2021 14:16

BoogleMcGroogle The Cardigan Corgi is a separate breed to the Pembroke Welsh Corgi which is what the Queen has. Cardis are a bit bigger than the Pems and have a bigger build, they come in more colours and have always kept their tails. Pembrokes also tend to be more outgoing and more ready to accept strangers. Cardis are a bit more reserved and will wait and assess people before they make friends. So you have the life and soul of the party and the guy who wants to go home early!

Both were used for herding cattle and sheep as well as guarding property and children. They can both be stubborn - if you were born to boss cows about then you need to have an attitude!

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 10/01/2021 18:09

I've wanted a Dandie Dinmont for years. One day.... 🤞

Wincarnis · 10/01/2021 22:23

I have a Glen of Imaal Terrier, fantastic dog, friendly, affectionate, bags of character, well behaved, doesn’t bark much, wish I’d known about them sooner!

Motorina · 10/01/2021 23:26

@gizmo

Having been practically raised by bloodhounds I can tell you there's a reason they're endangered GrinGrinGrin. You need a large amount of space, a high tolerance for slobber, and low expectations of obedience.

But just in case anyone out there is considering it....they're actually fabulous dogs for the right family. Very good temperament (in that they are tolerant and easygoing, not in the 'doing what I'm told' sense), great characters and hunting/tracking with them is good fun, even if it is the worlds most esoteric pass time Wink.

@gizmo - do they do recall at all? I've long been tempted by one, but exercise my dogs off lead, so coming back is quite important.

I'm a beagle owner, so my standards are pretty low mind...

gizmo · 11/01/2021 08:40

@Motorina. Their recall is generally fine until they find a more interesting scent. Then they go deaf...it's like they can only operate one sense at a time.

If you have beagles I imagine you will be familiar with the phenomenon Grin
