Any tips on teaching a dog to drop something? Smile

We started with a swap, usually for something better or more fun (for example, picked a grotty tissue out of the bin, swapped him for a squeaky toy). If you do this consistently they anticipate good things for dropping or leaving something alone so are willing to do it. I swear ours deliberately pretends to pick up something on a walk so he can get a treat for leaving it alone! Whatever you do don't chase them, turns it into a game, and don't panic if they do eat something truly revolting, their stomachs seem to be made of iron (ours ate a bit of rotten bird carcass, gulped it down then spat out a grim feather for his swap, urgh).

Oh I love this one and it so easy and works really well.Smile

Get some treats and just drop a treat on the floor.
Your dog will eat it
Say "drop" and drop a treat on the floor
Your dog will eat it
Make sure you say drop THEN drop the treat.

Ok what does this teach the dog basically to open their mouth and be happy to get a treat

When they are doing this reliable then you can ask for a drop when they have something in their mouth they will drop the item to eat the treat.

The brillant and amazin Chirag shows you how to do it here

@sewinginmyfreetime Trust me, mine eats his own poo so I'm not worried about him eating anything grim Grin It's just the sock pinching habit at the minute and anything and everything else. I was concerned he purposely does it for a treat but think ill carry on Smile Thankyou Smile

When they drop always offer something in exchange usually a high value treat. Mine will drop anything bar dead animals. They won't give up a dead pheasant for anything they would rather eat it.
