Hi all, I hope this is the right place to post. We brought our puppy home last week (a little black lab). It’s DP’s birthday in a couple of weeks, and I was wondering if anyone has any suggests of presents, related to the new puppy/owning a dog etc. Thanks in advance, any suggestions welcome!

Gin.

Or, on a more useful note, a decent pair of wellies.

My single most useful purchase last year was a Ruff & Tumble drying coat - but that's maybe one for next year when the pup's nearer full size. I know it's for the dog, but it saves hours of faffing about with wet towels as the dog hauls itself along your kitchen cupboards to dry off.

If it's a present for him, though... a handheld car vac? Muckboots? A Robovac? You will be amazed at how much hair will come out of that tiny puppy.

Muck boots, drying coat, car crate, warm dog walking coat, socks, hat and gloves.

BaublesAndBawbags · 07/01/2021 17:10

He needs to resign himself to the fact, early doors, that in time all presents will be for the dog.

Reachargable Head torch for the 6am walks in December ( this was what dh got for his birthday) Get one that you operate with touch or motion. Decent wellies. Warm coat waterproof coat, warm gloves.

Bizarrely it's my birthday on Monday and I am getting grubs wellies! I got mine from totally wellies . Co . Uk and they arrived today! Brill service and I don't work for them or know them - they just seem to be a small welly shop that do online too. Quite old fashioned.

Most useful thing we have is a dog walking bag. Doesn't have to be especially for dog walking but they do sell those. Small bag with enough pockets for poo bags, treats, a ball etc. So you can grab it and go, rather than take ages getting what you need.

I can't tell you how much HappyPup loves his ruff and tumble coat. Yesterday we came in from a really wet, cold and muddy walk and the minute we came in, he ran to where his coat is hung up and then waited for it to be put on Grin. He then snuggled up in his bed and had a lovely sleep and when he woke up he was dry. We all think they are magic!

For a special present, you can even get their name embroidered on it!

HappyThursdays · 07/01/2021 18:02

I would also say gloves if looking for a present for him as your hands do freeze holding the lead

moosemama · 07/01/2021 19:18

A beanie hat with built in head torch. One of the best things we’ve invested in and have really appreciated with the current weather for garden/toilet trips and walks. Dh bought the first one and I ended up buying one for everyone else as stocking fillers, because he was fed up of them pinching his! Grin

Training treat pouch with poo bag dispenser - lots of canvas or leather designs on Etsy.

Thin, but warm gloves with grips so he can keep them on to handle poo bags.

If he has wellies already, warm boot socks.

Thin fleece gilet to go under dog walking coat as an extra layer of insulation.

Dog training books? Obviously it depends on his level of knowledge but Easy Peasy Puppy Squeezy or The Happy Puppy Handbook are both good places to start.

Good introductions to understanding dog body language and communication are ‘Doggie Language: A Dog Lover's Guide to Understanding Your Best Friend’ by Lili Chin or ‘On Talking Terms with Dogs’ by Turid Rugaas.

I can also highly recommend ‘Bones would rain from the sky: Deepening our Relationship with Dogs’ by Suzanne Clothier as a less ‘manual’ type book, but more of an enjoyable read and excellent for learning to consider dog training as a relationship based process of learning together, rather than an autocratic one.

Voucher for your nearest carpet supplier, redeemable in a year's time.

(DunePuppy currently has the squits - I am not enjoying this one little bit.)

Cleverpolly3 · 07/01/2021 23:05

Locks for anything containing anything edible (remotely) and the doors made of reinforced steel

Failing that a safety date into food preparation area until puppy is too big and clears it or eats that

Or a bissell carpet washer

CoffeethenCrochet · 07/01/2021 23:06

Easy peasy puppy squeezy book

Love my beanie hat with built in headtorch for evening winter walks

New slippers so he has replacement when his get chewed Grin

I love my off the leash books by Rupert Fawcett - coffee table cartoons which are too close to home most of the time! Nice to flick through with a coffee Smile

Cleverpolly3 · 07/01/2021 23:07

Also as owner of a totally black dog something to see them at nighttime or the dark dark/ Morning walks

I spent two hours looking for her in remote Wales once in pitch black fields and forest.
She had actually fallen asleep under a chair outside and I hadn’t seen her

Mollymalone123 · 07/01/2021 23:12

We bought what looks like a giant pair of oven gloves but are in fact to dry the dog with( made from the scruffy type material) it’s been a brilliant purchase-also def head torch and I am always given a new mug with the dog’s photos on and also a lap tray with their photos on 😂

cherrypiepie · 08/01/2021 17:59

@CaraDuneRedux it is the worst experience ever. Hope he gets better soon and in the mean time GinWine

CaraDuneRedux · 08/01/2021 19:22

Thank you for the gin! Things are gradually solidifying.

Thick socks to go with wellies would get my vote.

Floomobal · 15/01/2021 11:16

Thank you for all of the suggestions! Unfortunately he already has lovely wellies/coat/hat.

The Ruff & Tumble looks great, but will wait for pup to grow to proper size.

Have decided on a black lab silhouette metal key rack/lead hook for by the front door. I think he’ll appreciate a practical gift.
