Advice please re vomiting dog

Hello firstly I know I should be speaking to my vet - I have and they are closed.

My dog (pug) is 9 and on meloxicam long term because of bladder stones/issues and should of had a kidney scan months ago but couldn’t due to COVID.

She’s been vomiting these last few days (no diareah but she has never had that ever) so now I wonder if it could be the meloxicam? I am going to starve her for the rest of today and maybe giver her scrambled eggs tomorrow but she’s in a special diet so I don’t know.

If she’s no better tomorrow I will call the emergency vet obviously but i thought I’d ask if anyone has any words of wisdom or comfort for me and Missy 😢

Might there be another vets open? Our practice is open so could try and avoid out if hours

Is there a possibility she may have eaten something she shouldn't have?

Do not starve her, that is old school and can exacerbate certain conditions. Rather try and get some chicken/rice based diet.

It could be the meloxicam but if shes been on it for a while is less likely.

Because its Christmas eve tomorrow id be tryimg my best to get a vet today to avoid ooh costs .

Lovemusic33 · 23/12/2020 14:55

Could she have eaten anything? Is she pooing at all? Any chance she could have eaten something she shouldn’t have?

I would be calling a different vet, surely they have an out of hours service?

Don’t want to alarm you but you never know with these things. I lost my dog to a blockage (she was elderly) and the only symptom was vomiting.

AgeOfExploration · 23/12/2020 15:04

When is she vomiting? Any particular times?

HidingInTheToiletFor5minsPeace · 23/12/2020 15:06

Contact the vet asap- things can go downhill very fast if a dog is continually vomiting. I don’t mean to frighten you but you do need to call a vet quickly.

rottiemum88 · 23/12/2020 15:07

You need to be very careful around the risk of dehydration if she's vomiting. I'd be calling the out of hours/emergency number today personally, tomorrow could well be too late.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 23/12/2020 15:11

Has he had any bowel movements? My dog was continuously vomiting when he had eaten a whole corn on the cob which caused a blockage resulting in surgery. I thought he had a tummy bug until I saw him straining to have a poo.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 23/12/2020 15:12

Sorry she*

NoSquirrels · 23/12/2020 15:12

Our vet is open today and tomorrow - it’s a working day. Im surprised yours is closed. Try a different practice?

Veterinari · 23/12/2020 15:14

Most vet practices are open today. If not then they legally have to have 24 hour emergency provisions in place.

I'd definitely recommend getting her seen

When was the kidney scan originally scheduled for? Most vet practices have been working through the pandemic and the guidance has been that animals should be seen where there are potential welfare concerns so I'm surprised they've not had a scan slot at all. Can they refer her?

Floralnomad · 23/12/2020 15:20

Your vet will most definitely have an emergency contact number , I wouldn’t assume it’s the meloxicam, it could be renal failure or anything and knowing the dog already has an issue waiting for tomorrow is not really an option .

Emergency vets ASAP

AllGongNoDinner · 23/12/2020 15:50

Oh thank you!!!! I left that message then spent ages phoning around but it turned out my vets ARE open they’d put the wrong lunchtime message on!

I have an appointment at 4.45 so will let you all know how I get on

Her scan was due I would say bout 4 months ago? She’s prone to bladder problems since the discovery of a golf ball sized stone found a few years ago (pic attached of both stone and dog) Grin

Hope it’s nothing too serious @AllGongNoDinner

pilates · 23/12/2020 19:38

Op, how did you get on?

TheoriginalLEM · 23/12/2020 19:44

How comes they haven't removed that stone???

AllGongNoDinner · 23/12/2020 20:35

Hello I’m back!

She’s had an anti sickness injection, stopping the meloxicam for a week and has got 5 days of omeprazole. The injection has knocked her out she’s so sleepy!

@TheoriginalLEM that was a couple of years ago now that’s the reason she’s on painkillers because of the damage done from that stone

pilates · 23/12/2020 20:39

Oh bless her, hope it sorts her out 🥰

How is she? Mine couldn’t stop vomiting but also had diarrhoea occasionally. Eventually diagnosed with pancreatitis.

This is why I asked when the dog is vomiting.

AllGongNoDinner · 24/12/2020 12:55

She’s not too bad however she was sick again on my bed last night but it wasn’t lumps sorry tmi Grin

She’s had her breakfast and kept it down

Sometimes she has stomach ache and runs to the garden and eats green stuff - this can be either preceded or followed by a frothy bile vomit. This has been the case since she was little so I dont think it’s connected

Also she has never had diarrhoea luckily

One more try...

WHEN is she vomiting, @AllGongNoDinner? Is it all the time, or more at certain times of day, or more during the night?

AllGongNoDinner · 24/12/2020 22:07

You don’t need to try anymore @AgeOfExploration

OP posts:
AgeOfExploration · 24/12/2020 22:36

@AllGongNoDinner vets often miss chronic pancreatitis in dogs. It causes vomiting at certain times of day/night. I expect you can google it if you’re interested. 🤷🏻‍♀️
