I have had a little rescue cross breed for 2 years, she had a terribly abusive start in life and a result needs careful handling and ongoing training. It took months to gain her trust but once I had it she turned into a playful character who adores being hugged and stroked. She will tolerate me washing and brushing her but is wary of others. She hates going to the groomer so she goes to a lady who specialises in dogs who don't like grooming and has a brilliant reputation. This lady works hard to gain their trust.

My dog can be reactive if her paws are touched and can bare her teeth (not with me but with vets or the groomer) today when she was picked up the groomer said she initially had to use a muzzle for a few minutes while picking her up but removed it and she was then really well behaved. This is the first time she has had to do this and is the only thing out of the ordinary at all which is the only reason I have mentioned it.

When she returned home today she was like a different dog she was very docile and timid and spaced out. I thought she was a bit upset after being cut and left her for an hour to lie quietly. This is really unusual as she is a very bouncy playful character.

After an hour I tried to coax her off her bed with treats and then her dinner but she was totally withdrawn and refused both. She was starved when younger and drastically underweight when she arrived to live with me so has always been food obsessive. I have never known her to ever refuse a treat or food, she usually dances a crazy jig when any food is on offer.

She wont come to me and went to her upstairs bed a 6pm and refused to move, so much so that I have had to pick her up and carry her to the garden so she would go to the toilet.

She wont engage at all with her toys and is just looking at me from her bed. She wont come near me for a stroke or fuss and if I go to her and stroke her she is just starring into space.

This morning she is the same, she hasn't yet been to the toilet so I have called the vets to get an urgent appointment this afternoon at 4pm.

The only thing she has done is drink a little water but she vomited it straight back up. She also now seems to be having trouble walking and seems very un co-ordinated and spaced out and is struggling to walk.

At first I thought maybe she could be traumatised from the muzzle/getting cut but now I think illness is much more likely due to her continuing decline. She has not had her boosters due to the pandemic so I have kept her on lead and away from other dogs. I know she wouldn't get ill so quickly after being groomed so it is possible she picked something up a day or two ago and the stress of getting groomed has sent her into decline quicker.

Trying to keep calm until we can go to the vet but really worried.

Could the groomer have actually left the muzzle on for the entire appointment? Maybe her thinking was well intended and thought the process would be faster and therefore less stressful for ddog - but sadly backfired... Not saying groomer is abusive!

I know what you mean, originally I thought it might be like a PTSD trigger related to the muzzle. I wondered if her abuser may have muzzled her when she was younger when she was beaten. However the vomiting her water up today , not going to the toilet and her un co-ordinated walking makes me think it may be a physical illness but I could be wrong.

Could be the body in some sort of shock and can't eat /drink /Wee. Poor ddog. Does she like being wrapped up in a blanket? One of ours was quite badly treated previously and likes being covered over as she never had a blanket.. Scrap of carpet in kennel only.. Sad

Can you call vet and say condition changed and you need to go sooner?

Any bleeding around gums?

SingingSands · 12/12/2020 12:11

Those symptoms sound exactly like what like my friend's dog had last week. It was meningitis.

userxx · 12/12/2020 12:15

How worryingly, what time are you at the vet?

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 12/12/2020 12:19

Went to try and get her to wee again and carried her to the garden. She cant walk a straight line and is staggering. Have called the vet and they have said to bring her in. DP has rushed her up there immediately.

hope she is ok, sending lots of good vibes

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 12/12/2020 12:36

Thanks, I've had a dreadful few months and my DP only got out of hospital on Thursday after 7 weeks in hospital. I know it sounds silly but she has kept me going these last few months.

Oh bless her, and you.
Glad she’s at the vets now. Let us know.

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 12/12/2020 13:17

The vets have admitted her, she was completely submissive and docile with the vet which is not like her at all, she is a skittish tricky gremlin who usually needs holding before a vet can get near her.

Her temperature is low and her gums are pale, they have hooked her up to a drip put her on a heat pad and taken bloods.

Got the DC's arriving home for Christmas today so after a bit of a panic sob I am trying to keep busy.

Floralnomad · 12/12/2020 14:55

Do they have any idea what they think the problem is @SunburstsOrMarbleHalls ? Hope she feels better soon .

MimsyBorogroves · 12/12/2020 14:59

Paws crossed for her in our house.

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 12/12/2020 15:02

Its bad, a ruptured spleen. She is in surgery with a 30% chance of survival.

I had to give her a fighting chance. She had a dismal 3 years of life as a pup but survived that and has been with me 2 years and been loved so much.

Oh you poor things. Best of luck.

StrongTea · 12/12/2020 15:06

Sorry to read how unwell she is. Hope the op is successful and getting her in quicker was wise.

AlCalavicci · 12/12/2020 15:09

Oh no , I hope she makes a full recovery.
But if she doesn't console yourself with the fact you made her very happy and comfortable while you had her and you are doing the best you can for her right now.

BiteyShark · 12/12/2020 15:12

Fingers crossed for a good outcome Thanks

Darklane · 12/12/2020 15:17

Oh so sorry to hear this, you must be worried sick. Hope she can pull through, they wouldn’t have operated if they didn’t think there was a chance for her. Truly hope everything goes well & she can soon be home.

joystir59 · 12/12/2020 15:21

Everything crossed for your lovely little dog coming through this xx
