I have had a little rescue cross breed for 2 years, she had a terribly abusive start in life and a result needs careful handling and ongoing training. It took months to gain her trust but once I had it she turned into a playful character who adores being hugged and stroked. She will tolerate me washing and brushing her but is wary of others. She hates going to the groomer so she goes to a lady who specialises in dogs who don't like grooming and has a brilliant reputation. This lady works hard to gain their trust.

My dog can be reactive if her paws are touched and can bare her teeth (not with me but with vets or the groomer) today when she was picked up the groomer said she initially had to use a muzzle for a few minutes while picking her up but removed it and she was then really well behaved. This is the first time she has had to do this and is the only thing out of the ordinary at all which is the only reason I have mentioned it.

When she returned home today she was like a different dog she was very docile and timid and spaced out. I thought she was a bit upset after being cut and left her for an hour to lie quietly. This is really unusual as she is a very bouncy playful character.

After an hour I tried to coax her off her bed with treats and then her dinner but she was totally withdrawn and refused both. She was starved when younger and drastically underweight when she arrived to live with me so has always been food obsessive. I have never known her to ever refuse a treat or food, she usually dances a crazy jig when any food is on offer.

She wont come to me and went to her upstairs bed a 6pm and refused to move, so much so that I have had to pick her up and carry her to the garden so she would go to the toilet.

She wont engage at all with her toys and is just looking at me from her bed. She wont come near me for a stroke or fuss and if I go to her and stroke her she is just starring into space.

This morning she is the same, she hasn't yet been to the toilet so I have called the vets to get an urgent appointment this afternoon at 4pm.

The only thing she has done is drink a little water but she vomited it straight back up. She also now seems to be having trouble walking and seems very un co-ordinated and spaced out and is struggling to walk.

At first I thought maybe she could be traumatised from the muzzle/getting cut but now I think illness is much more likely due to her continuing decline. She has not had her boosters due to the pandemic so I have kept her on lead and away from other dogs. I know she wouldn't get ill so quickly after being groomed so it is possible she picked something up a day or two ago and the stress of getting groomed has sent her into decline quicker.

Trying to keep calm until we can go to the vet but really worried.

Floralnomad · 12/12/2020 16:29

Blimey how did that happen , did the groomer drop her from a great height ? Hope she comes through the OP ok @SunburstsOrMarbleHalls we will keep our paws crossed for her .

Hm2020 · 12/12/2020 17:07

So sorry to hear this what happened at the groomers Sad

BiteyShark · 12/12/2020 17:11

Tbf it might have been a problem starting before the groomers but being handled all over might have bought it to OP (and groomers) attention that they were in pain.

QOD · 12/12/2020 17:14

Oh my goodness 😔

HappyPumpkin81 · 12/12/2020 17:17

My dog had a tumour on the spleen which ruptured. There was no abuse, or triggering event she'd had a lovely day and it just exploded silently inside her. She was rushed to emergency surgery but sadly did not survive. I hope there is a better outcome for your wee dog ❤️

shadowlily · 12/12/2020 17:17

Sending very best wishes and really hope there is a positive outcome. Will be thinking of you

Flowers I hope your dog pulls through

Lougle · 12/12/2020 17:28

That's so sad. One of our German Shepherds had to have his spleen removed. He was such a good boy. I remember trying to get him into the vets. He couldn't walk well at all and I remember saying to him "X...WALK!!!!!!!" because there was no other way to get him in (it was many years ago). He did. Such a brave boy.

It turned out to be cancer for him, so although he had his spleen removed he died a few months later. I hope it's a better outcome for your lovely dog.

propertyhell · 12/12/2020 17:30

Fingers crossed op. Our ddog had huge surgery and her spleen removed. She recovered well (despite being elderly).

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 12/12/2020 17:39

She has made it through surgery, she had a tumour attached to her spleen that had ruptured and was bleeding profusely.

The vet said it was really degraded and falling apart in his hands, it was a timebomb and could have gone at any time. It was just unlucky that she was at the groomers and being handled a lot but it easily could have ruptured next week when running about or if she bumped into a chair etc. Its 50/50 whether benign or cancerous.

She is critically ill and her red count is very low (11) she cant wait for the blood to arrive from the local vet trauma centre so she has been put on plasma for now. The vet said he was surprised to get her through surgery and admitted if we had waited for her 4pm appointment she probably wouldn't have survived the operation.

Just a waiting game over the next 24 hours to see if she can survive the surgery. Then the wait to see what type of tumour it is.

Well done for phoning again. Flowers

BiteyShark · 12/12/2020 17:41

Thanksfor you both. Waiting is really hard but hoping for the best.

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 12/12/2020 17:43

@Lougle realistically I think we may be dealing with the same as you went through with your lovely boy. The vet said if it was cancerous she may have a few months.

propertyhell · 12/12/2020 17:50

That's exactly the same as our ddog, turned out to be non cancerous but the vet had never seen a tumour so bad. Well done for getting her in.

Tinselette · 12/12/2020 17:54

Oh sunbursts I'm so sorry for you and your little dog. I hope it's non-. 💐
