I have had a little rescue cross breed for 2 years, she had a terribly abusive start in life and a result needs careful handling and ongoing training. It took months to gain her trust but once I had it she turned into a playful character who adores being hugged and stroked. She will tolerate me washing and brushing her but is wary of others. She hates going to the groomer so she goes to a lady who specialises in dogs who don't like grooming and has a brilliant reputation. This lady works hard to gain their trust.

My dog can be reactive if her paws are touched and can bare her teeth (not with me but with vets or the groomer) today when she was picked up the groomer said she initially had to use a muzzle for a few minutes while picking her up but removed it and she was then really well behaved. This is the first time she has had to do this and is the only thing out of the ordinary at all which is the only reason I have mentioned it.

When she returned home today she was like a different dog she was very docile and timid and spaced out. I thought she was a bit upset after being cut and left her for an hour to lie quietly. This is really unusual as she is a very bouncy playful character.

After an hour I tried to coax her off her bed with treats and then her dinner but she was totally withdrawn and refused both. She was starved when younger and drastically underweight when she arrived to live with me so has always been food obsessive. I have never known her to ever refuse a treat or food, she usually dances a crazy jig when any food is on offer.

She wont come to me and went to her upstairs bed a 6pm and refused to move, so much so that I have had to pick her up and carry her to the garden so she would go to the toilet.

She wont engage at all with her toys and is just looking at me from her bed. She wont come near me for a stroke or fuss and if I go to her and stroke her she is just starring into space.

This morning she is the same, she hasn't yet been to the toilet so I have called the vets to get an urgent appointment this afternoon at 4pm.

The only thing she has done is drink a little water but she vomited it straight back up. She also now seems to be having trouble walking and seems very un co-ordinated and spaced out and is struggling to walk.

At first I thought maybe she could be traumatised from the muzzle/getting cut but now I think illness is much more likely due to her continuing decline. She has not had her boosters due to the pandemic so I have kept her on lead and away from other dogs. I know she wouldn't get ill so quickly after being groomed so it is possible she picked something up a day or two ago and the stress of getting groomed has sent her into decline quicker.

Trying to keep calm until we can go to the vet but really worried.

StormsDontLastForever · 12/12/2020 23:28

Thinking of you and you're dog Thanks.

Pets become family, I lost my boy last year at the age of 17, sadly had to be put to sleep due to old age and pain etc, still hurts everyday!

Amazing what vets can do & how quickly dogs can turn round and improve.

I am not religious but I will say a prayer for you tonight ❤️

RainbowsAndFrogs · 12/12/2020 23:29

Really hoping you get some good news and she makes a full recovery (teeth baring and all!), so glad you got her to the vet when you did.

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 12/12/2020 23:59

Thank you for all of you best wishes it means a lot.

I've probably made her sound like a right grump but she is honestly such a sweetheart once you gain her trust. She is absolutely my shadow and adores the family. She is a complete hug monster and adores being fussed and will impatiently nudge you if you stop stroking her. Heaven forbid if i'm late walking her as she gets very impatient and vocal and tells me off.

She is wary with strangers but as long as you ignore her completely it wont be long until she decided you are allowed to stroke her on her terms if she doesn't feel threatened. She hates it if people try to stroke her before she has figured out whether they are a threat or not and that is when she will bare her teeth.

She is a shih tzu terrier cross (we think jack russell) with an underbite with the head of a terrier and the body of a shih tzu. Her name is Elsa, Im not bothered if Im outed so I have attached photos.

Really hope she pulls through op and that everything is benign. She's a little stunner.

TheLadyOfShallnott · 13/12/2020 00:07

My old rescue girl was a wee bit complex too initially. When they are broken it takes time to build trust again.

She’s a bonny wee thing and she looks happy and loved. Which is all we can do for them.

Hoping for happy news tomorrow. Flowers

mrsbyers · 13/12/2020 01:16

Come on Elsa ,
You can get through this

ekidmxcl · 13/12/2020 01:19

She’s a beauty.

Hope she does well tonight.

coastergirl · 13/12/2020 01:24

She's gorgeous and looks similar to my old girl Poppy. We lost her a few years ago. It sounds like she's fighting hard! As I'm typing this, my rescue cat Walter is running his wet nose all over my hand and trying to climb on me. Maybe he's sending love too!

akerman · 13/12/2020 01:31

Oh, she’s a sweetheart. Keeping everything crossed for a good recovery xx

TheWeightOfWords · 13/12/2020 01:35

Fingers crossed for you. I hope she's OK.

Crossing everything that she pulls through Flowers

Oh Starburst, your thread has made me sob. I'm on nightwatch with a poorly DDog and I know how precious they are. Lovely Elsa, I'm sending you virtual snuggles and well wishes for a speedy recovery. My dog has had a bad stomach for a couple of days but been fine in herself until this evening. She's very quiet and not herself at all.
