Opinions on DH choices for pup

We are both about to retire so after a looooooong wait, we have a new pup coming. I have been thinking about names - DH announced he would like Kassima...(or Vespa at a push) I have said no - mainly because I felt he didnt consider mine and I feel I would have to explain why she is called Kassima.......which annoys me. I am being chidish - however is Kassima that terrible? Added pic - orange collar!

Not terribly keen on the same but the pup is ADORABLE 😍. What breed is she?

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 04/12/2020 12:12

Could you compromise on Kassima - Kassie for short?

Bluntness100 · 04/12/2020 12:12

I think if kassie for short it’s quite nice. But not in its entirety.

helloxhristmas · 04/12/2020 12:14

Not a nice name but how cute!

Hoppinggreen · 04/12/2020 12:15

I don’t like it at all, why does he want that?
Not keen on Vespa either
What were your suggestions?

blowinahoolie · 04/12/2020 12:17

Lovely puppy ❤️ enjoy once she arrives. Not too sure about the name.

midnightstar66 · 04/12/2020 12:18

I don't like Vespa. Kassima is nice but I assume it has some meaning (which I don't know but probably wouldn't ask) is your beautiful pup a girl? Would shortening to kassi be an option?

olderandwisernot · 04/12/2020 12:19

@catwithflowers she is a 'fox red' lab..
My suggestions were:
Amber
Pixie
Autumn
Maple (son lives in Canada)
But he is adamant - he is being a dick imo and maybe I am by saying its crap - as I think its too random!

I like Kassie. Both my dogs have unusual full names that people always ask about though, and its led to some interesting conversations.
What did you want to call the pup

olderandwisernot · 04/12/2020 12:20

Kassima - he watched a tv programme that had the name in it (spelled differently I think?) I am suprised he hasn't gone for 'Pussy-Galore' grrrrr......

WaltzingBetty · 04/12/2020 12:25

Do you mean Cosima?

I've never heard of Kassima

WaltzingBetty · 04/12/2020 12:25

It's the name of a character in Orphan black

midnightstar66 · 04/12/2020 12:31

Cosima is better or Cosmo. I think 2 syllable names are better for dogs - easier to call loudly 😆

Hoppinggreen · 04/12/2020 12:35

Maple is lovely.
2 syllable names are better for dogs training I think anyway

olderandwisernot · 04/12/2020 12:59

yes you are correct @waltzingbetty - Orphan Black! And it is Cosima! Although he has his spelling now!

OP posts:
RunningFromInsanity · 04/12/2020 13:01

Kassie is nice
Maple is my favourite though

SockDrawer · 04/12/2020 13:05

You’ll end up saying Kassie or Kas, so consider whether you like those names.

(In fact you’ll probably end up calling her so many different nicknames that have nothing to do with her actual name.😂)

midnightstar66 · 04/12/2020 13:06

The wrong spelling would annoy me more than the name 😆

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 04/12/2020 13:06

i think Cassie/Kassie is a great dog name, easy to call, and hear, and easier to jolly up than Kassima

You use Cassie/Kassie and pup will like you the best! :o

Sam1815 · 04/12/2020 13:19

I’ve always found my dog responds better to the two syllable version of any name
When we’ve had single or triple syllable names they always get converted as the dog responds better.
For
example my dog is mischief but we call her missy, or frank becomes frankie.
Willow is a gorgeous name I heard for a red lab recently as well as Robyn (neighbours new sister lab dogs)

CMOTDibbler · 04/12/2020 13:25

I have to say I'm not keen on your choices (sorry). I can't imagine yelling any of them at the top of my lungs, or having little pet names out of them.

But if both of you hate the other ones picks, its time for a completely new list each

vanillandhoney · 04/12/2020 14:14

When we went to puppy class, we were told the best names are two syllables with vowels or "y's" on the end - so names like Maisie, Archie, Lily, Katie, Bailey, Poppy.

Apparently they're easier to call out when teaching recall and dogs are more like to respond to a high-pitched "Mai-seeee" than a longer name.

No idea how accurate that is, but our dogs' name is on that list so I enjoyed feeling a bit smug Grin

Stellaris22 · 04/12/2020 21:48

I'm a big fan of unusual names for dogs, but I find anything longer than 2 syllables doesn't work.

Mine is named after a wind farm! So I'm used to explaining her name any time someone asks.

catwithflowers · 04/12/2020 22:00

Such a beauty ❤️

PurpleMustang · 04/12/2020 23:09

Unless its 'his' dog then i think you both need to agree on the name. We all chipped in ideas and dropped ones rest didn't like and had 3 we all kinda liked but the kids had final choice as its 'their' dog 🐕 i always say you got to be comfortable shouting it across a field
