dog is growling in the kitchen & I cant get him out

He's a lovely dog normally but this house has a lot of doors and I think he gets scared. He's between the kitchen door and the fridge. I've tried him with treats, with getting his lead out and putting on my coat and he wont budge. I cant get to the fridge ! I tried to open the freezer door - under the fridge-freezer - but he went mental at me. He's in the kitchen now growling at nothing - I'm in the other room. What should I do. I don't know why he's doing this. He started it in a another room between the sofa and the door, and I had to block him from going into that space. Anyone any tips - if I throw treats out of hte kitchen he dashes out, eats them and dashes back to his 'spot'. I'm actually scared

Have you had him long? Is he a big dog? Are you in danger?

He needs to be seen by a vet

Is he in pain ? Is he old enough to have dementia ?

Could you have a mouse? Is he a rescue dog?
Why would he be scared of doors?

Ghosts?

I would say rather be safe and phone someone for help! He might have had a stroke or something and might suddenly not know who you are? Either way, it sounds like it could be dangerous for you to be near him until you find out what’s going on!

Could you contain him by closing the doors and giving him time in the room with his bed?

If you're in danger, remove yourself and phone a friend/relative because whatever damage he could do to the house doesn't matter compared to damage to you.

The only time one of our dogs has behaved this way was when she had a terrible ear infection and was in enormous pain.

Or, not to be overly dramatic, he might go for you. I’d phone a vet. Keep him away anyone.

Can’t believe people are actually suggesting ghosts!

This sounds like guarding behaviour, is he possessive with food? Has something dropped down by the fridge, that he can't quite get to but that he doesn't want anyone else to have?

This is very odd, is he a cocker? They can get 'cocker rage' which i thoight was a myth til mine did it. He randomly set up a place somewhere he decided to manically guard and would savage anyone or anything that went near it. Then, he'd snap out of it and be normal again, for months.

Try to leave him well alone for a while (sounds safest) to see if he'll calm down without input from you.
Can you open a door into the garden or elsewhere that he might choose to go to when he leaves this space.
I had a dog that was incredibly territorial and aggressive over vomit, he was once sick several times in a roonannd I had to wait until he went to bed (thank fully that was in a crate) so I could close the door, cover it over and then clear up. It's as really scary and o feel for you, act nonchalant as far as you can but do whatever you need to to keep safe

How old is he?

Could it be dementia?

he's 9. he's a black cocker spaniel. I had him out today and he seemed grand, he was chasing balls. I better get him to a vet tomorrow. He did this before in the other room, and we just went to bed and left him to it, and he was fine again in the morning, so I don't know. He's moved away from the fridge now but he's in the doorway of the kitchen. I was able to squeeze past him but I'm not letting the kids go near him.

So this is new behaviour for him? Are you in a new home or someone else's house?

If this is new behaviour then definately call the vet. If this is a long term anxiety issue then leave alone. Do you have children? If so you must keep them away from your dog. Also don't force him to do anything. You need to leave him to come to you otherwise there is a risk he will bite.

How long have you had him

Could it be that your dog can smell something like gas? Check that everything is switched off and safe. They have a great sense of smell. I know this is probably unlikely but you never know. My dog used to go bonkers if there was a strange smell somewhere. Otherwise definitely check with the vet. Dogs in pain are unusually angry, even the most placid types. Keep us posted. X

that is exactly what he is doing gooseybby. How did you get yours to 'forget' it? I managed to get him out of the kitchen but when I closed the door and tried to open it he nearly went for him. I can hear him now, he's growling very loudly. there's nobody anywhere near him …??? thanks everyone!

Investigate. Is there a food out he might be sensitive to. Something that looks like something else. Could there be a mouse behind the fridge. There is something there he's concerned about .

A few possibilities?

1. Get him seen by a vet urgently as others have said to determine if this could be something like dementia, maybe even a water infection if he’s elderly.

But also:

1. Call out an exterminator perhaps. I wonder if there are mice or voles moving under your house, under floorboards, in the walls, and if he has a strong terrier-type drive, it could be driving him crazy hearing/smelling them in certain spots? It’s worth checking, especially as now is the time of year for things to start moving in.

I wonder if he might be having some kind of seizure? Definitely would get him checked by a vet.

I left mine to it and he would snap out of it in his own time, but he was extremely unsafe around people and others. He'd be fine for a long time, then snap! Into a rage

We've been here about 7 - 8 months. I had to get a stair gate as he started being possessive about the landing and he didn't want to come down. There are a lot of doors in the house and it's quite small. I think he's scared he might get closed in or closed out maybe. But gooseybb sounds like cocker rage... We've had him since he was a puppy.
