Dog growling for food

Our dog has started to growl at me, demanding food. He does this near his dinner time or other random times in the day. Any suggestions on how to stop this?

Sounds like a rather surly personality. You need to make sure that he never gets anything as a result of growling. I would be slow to afford sofa or human's bed privileges to a demanding animal like that.

Just ignore it, if it provokes you to do something he will do it more to get his way, ours used to whine at people in the street for a belly rub, we had to tell them she would bite!

Temporarything · 28/11/2020 07:15

Ah he’s not really surly but he’s certainly pushing his luck trying to bully us into giving him food!

Will just ignore then. He’s a rescue dog so very good orientated.

Thanks.

Food orientated I mean.

It's just attention seeking. Mine does it when he wants my lunch 🤣 he gets sent to his bed and sulks silently from there instead!

I would make sure you have set mealtimes etc. though as most dogs like routine when it comes to their meals.

Thanks. God yes. Our dog is very into routine! Gets pissed off if we stay up late and interrupt his bedtime 😆

Mine will tell me off if I dare to feed him a few minutes late Grin
DartmoorChef · 28/11/2020 14:21

Mine tips his water bowl up if he doesn't get fed when he expects it.. 😂

pigsDOfly · 28/11/2020 14:33

Mine will start the 'intense staring treatment' if food is a bit late in arriving.

Amazing how long a dog can stare at you without blinking or looking away Grin

Cheeky sods aren’t they??? Smile

Not food related, but when we're sitting on the (2 seater) sofa together she often won't really settle and will keep sitting up and looking around.

If I get up and leave the room for any reason I will come back to find that she has stretched herself out across the sofa and is fast asleep, and although she's small, I find myself having to squeeze into the remaining available space at one side.

Sometimes I feel like I'm just in the way Grin

About an hour ago, mine whined at DH to go out. As soon as DH got up, he promptly jumped up and curled up in a ball on his spot and refused to move Grin

I call this type of growling "grumble-bumming". My dog is often a grumble bum when she doesn't get her own way...Grin

tabulahrasa · 28/11/2020 18:38

I had a wee foster who did that... I just ignored him, he stopped after a few weeks.

He also used to growl if his toy got stuck somewhere and I was to get it for him, and the puzzle toy we gave him also got growled at fir not dispensing the food without effort, lol

He was just chatty Smile

Sitdowncupoftea · 28/11/2020 19:06

If you don't want your dog to growl for food if you ignore and don't reward when they do it. Dogs do "talk" mine do.

doodleygirl · 28/11/2020 19:23

My girl grumbles all the time, food, games, open the door, let me out,let me in, move over Grin she likes to chat.

For some reason ours has suddenly started growling and barking at the ketchup bottle... 😂 😂 😂
