My shih tzu (aged nearly 12.5 and very fit) had bloods done when he went in for his dental and his levels of calcium and PTH were high. He's had a scan and there's a small nodule on his parathyroid gland which is causing this and the vet says to have it removed. If it is not removed calcium could rise further and damage his kidneys in which case nothing can be done. But they have no idea if this will happen or timeframe. If he has the operation it is obviously risky due to the nature of it and the general anaesthetic. Obviously the vet says to do it.
Just wondering if anyone out there has experience. I just want to do what's best for him at his age and for his quality of life. Any experience of this would be much appreciated.
