New puppy meeting other family animals

Hi all, we're bringing home a Puppy early next month, we have a 6 year old cat and this will be our first dog. I'm fully aware of how difficult this may be!

My daughter has 2 cats and a dog and wants us to go to her for Christmas if allowed, Pup will be 10 weeks so won't have had his 2nd vaccinations.

Covid worries aside, I'm not sure taking a new puppy to a house with 3 other pets, one of whom is quite new itself, will be entirely enjoyable for anyone involved given we'll still be toilet training, etc.

What say more experienced dog owners? WWYD?

Thank you.

Socialising is SO important for puppies and must be done right. Check out the kikopup youtube channel and search for socialising on there.

Socialising is important but a full on day of lots of activity and animals in a new location could be overdoing it a bit.

I guess the answer is it depends. Depends on your new pup and the existing cats and dogs. How much space there will be , if the puppy has a place to chill etc. It will not be that relaxing for you to having to keep an eye on the puppy and in and out for toilet training etc.

I would be up for it for a couple of hours but probably not for the whole day but I am pretty lazy Smile

I think the socialisation might be good. Vaccines shouldn’t matter as long as the other pets are vaccinated, according to what I have understood from our vet.

You’ll need to watch your puppy like a hawk, and your daughter will need to be relaxed about having any toileting accidents in her house. I’d do it though.

We collect our puppy on the 29th, and Covid restrictions allowing, we will take him to my parents for NYE.

Maybe decide once you've got the puppy! They do sleep a lot though...basically at that age they poop, wee, chew and sleep.

Some great advice on Dog Training Advice and support Facebook group - really good on introducing puppies to cats. Basically slowly and ensure cat can get away!

Our cat kept his distance for about 2 months then started to get used to the idea. Now they are fine, not friends, but fine. But we never let the puppy chase the cat. The cat is definitely the boss.

Christmas day - maybe don't commit till you've got the puppy. But they do sleep a lot at 10 weeks, and wee and poop, and chew and bite... But mostly sleep!

Oh thanks so much for all the advice, everyone! I'm really grateful.

I guess we'll wait and see how he is when we bring him home then make a decision.

Payment in the form of puppy!
