How do I stop DDog hating puppy?!

We have a 3 year old male chihuahua, he is lovely soppy thing and is great with people and kids alike.

We got a male chihuahua puppy almost 4 weeks ago so he is 12 weeks old and DDog hates, hates, hates him.

As soon as puppy goes any where near him his back goes up and he growls and barks...I don't think he would bite though.

Currently we have a gate separating them and Ddog is in a separate room most of the day from the puppy apart from when supervised.

We have tried to get them together gradually and give ddog his favourite treats and lots of praise to encourage good behaviour but we are not pushing him.

When puppy is asleep ddog is curious and will come and look and sniff but all other times he hates him!

I think it is just puppies exuberance and jumpyness that ddog finds difficult to cope with.

Anyone got any advice or any tips or just some reassurance that it will get better?!

Surely being called " DDog " must help soothe DDog's feelings, because the new dog is only "Pup" with no "D".
There'll be a lot of rivalry and hurt feelings when Pup realises DDog is still the favourite.

They're both adorable OP!

@LaMarschallin he is indeed Dpuppy...he's an absolute smasher and we are smitten!

Just like having DD2 being very careful to make sure there is no favouritism!

They are both gorgeous. Your older one looks like mine.

We got him at 14 weeks as he wasn't getting on with the dog (chihuahua) the family already had. This had been going on since they got him.

Such a shame. He's a lovely did but he is in play mode all day everyday. The other dog hated him as he was trying to grieve for his playmate, their cat that had been run over.

On the positive side of this he now gets on fairly well with my other two cats. It's took a good six months for them to get on. They won't cuddle like my cats do but will happily both sit either side of me.

He's just too boisterous to chill with them. They want to sleep and cuddle not chase him which he is still learning. They give him the odd swipe when he's too much but he thinks it's playing. He's even wagging his tail when they swipe him.

I wold suggest giving it more time, supervised.

Hope it gets better for you.

Thanks @nancybotwinbloom

Honestly it is almost like DDog thought oh bloody hell she's posting about me on MN so I'd better shape up!

Yesterday evening we took the gate away and let them mingle, we didn't take our eyes off of them though. Apart from DDog letting DPuppy know he wasn't allowed on his bed with a big bark it was OK and they sniffed and observed each other, no playing yet but I am so much more hopeful now

At least now DH can stop saying Christmas will be ruined, although I do think DPuppy might try and savage the Christmas trees!Grin

Yes, our cats always get in ours. The dog won't remember his tree at his okd house he was too young but I have a bet on with my DH how long till one of them tips it over!

I just wanted to update and say thank you for the advice and the words of reassurance that I had not ruined Ddogs life forever with DPuppy.

Today this happened and I almost cried tears of joy! Ddog still gets pissed off but is so much happier, I was starting to doubt i would ever see the day!

That pic is actually not very clear..they are both on DDogs bed! The first time DPuppy has ever been allowed on there. After this photo they actually fell asleep...together!
