Dog tag

Hi all,
We are due to collect our long awaited puppy at the beginning of Jan. I’m just looking for a bit of advice really about dog tag sizes. Does anyone know roughly what an 8 week old show lab will weigh, and what sort of size dog tags will be reasonable? I don’t want to swamp him, but want the info to be able to be read if someone needs to! Thanks

He won't need the tag until you start to take him out for a walk, by which time he'll be substantially bigger than he will be when he first comes home.

A Timpson's Small tag will be fine. It doesn't need a lot of information on it and you can use both sides - on the front your surname and post code, and on the reverse a telephone number.

I've had the 25cm one of these a few times.
("D"S1 clipped the lead onto the ring that connects the tag to the collar d-ring, rather than onto the d-ring directly - dog pulls, connector ring springs open, tag drops off, dog escapes. You would think an 18yo would remember to clip onto the right place!! I might be somewhat annoyed after this happened again last week. On the up side, I ordered on Thursday afternoon and it arrived yesterday.)

Flexitag My dog has had her one on her collar for two years, she lost a couple from Timpson in quick succession but the Flexitag is still on and easy to read.

I'll bear that in mind for next time the 18yo can't undertake a seemingly simple task....and make him pay for it.

On a side note, I have found that tags from eBay are much cheaper than Timpsons. They're also supplied on a very flimsy ring, which has been known to fail in a matter of days. A proper keyring is far more durable.

These are the best. Unless you lose the collar, you will not lose the tag.
Indentitag slide tags

You can put info on both sides, so if you are paranoid about dog theft (that's me, then), you can just have your phone number easily visible, and state 'other info on reverse' so someone would have to take the collar off and take the tag off the collar to find your address - easy to do if you're returning a lost dog, not easy to do if you're planning to nick it. My dogs' ones have home address (which is legally required), two phone numbers for us and vet phone number.

£6 a go and they last forever.

I meant to add, they will not work with clip collars as you can't slide them on, but buckle collars are fine.

YY to the Identitag tag - they're really good.

Derbee · 18/11/2020 12:00

Thanks all! Have ordered an identitag for when he’s big, and a ‘normal’ tag for as he grows, as I suspect it will have to be a buckle collar at first.

Haven’t had a puppy for so long! Does anybody know what sort of weight an 8 week old puppy will be? All the books say carry your puppy on walks until 2 weeks after second vaccinations. Imagining carrying a Labrador for the first 4 weeks seems mad. Would it be more mad to buy a dog backpack or some form of carrying device?

Want him to be well socialised to traffic/runners/noises etc but can’t picture carrying a relatively large puppy around for a month Confused

If you have a friend with a big garden and vaccinated dogs you could pay a visit...

Our vet said ten days after second vaccs - check with yours.
