Hard eye gunk

My shih tzu recently developed hard gunk under his eyes, where eye fluid had solidified and proved impossible to remove. My vet said it was fine and that the substance dissolves with water, but this is clearly not true in practice.

I'm sure that having hard lumps hanging in fur in such a delicate place is uncomfortable so I asked his groomer to cut it off (I don't dare go near his eyes with scissors myself). Now just a few days after grooming I can feel the lumps building up again.

What's the best approach? Wiping with a wet cotton pad every day? Or a pad soaked with something more effective (eye make-up remover?!!!?)

Would be grateful for any recommendations.

No don't use eye make remover on a dog.

My dog gets something similar under her eyes, I imagine a lot of dogs do, I use a wet cotton pad soaked in warm water, boiled and from the kettle as it's near her eyes, when necessary; warm water works better than cold.

It does take a bit of effort and you might have to pick it out of the fur a bit but if you do it every day it should keep on top of it.

My small dog gets this too. Plain water does soften it but you need to soak and leave it for a bit. I usually wet at the beginning of a bath then it's soft enough to comb/pull out gently at the end. But he only gets bathed once a week or so - I can't face doing it each day!

Lots of warm water & soak it every day, sometimes twice, with one of those fluff free cotton pads, Aldi cheap. I sometimes use micellar water to remove the staining
