Dogs and leather car seats?

In the next few days we will be picking a new puppy (mini-dachshund) and also a new car. DH is worried about compatibility of leather seats with dogs. This will be our first dog in the 'grown up life - we both had dogs as children and our parents did not really drive with dogs in cars.

Please share your thoughts. I would be so grateful...

They’re slightly easier to clean? Other than that - consider a cover in hot weather.

Dogs need to be suitably restrained in the car. We have leather car seats but our dog sits in a dog car seat anyway.

You can get little booster seats for smaller dogs, or large seat covers that cover the whole seat and the back of the one in front. Alternatively you could crate in the boot

MLM, buttery, midnight star

Thank you so much! One less thing to worry about..

It's 10 days till we can pick her up and I think I am overthinking everything (including weather we are allowed to drive for 2.5 hours each way to collect her)

I have leather car seats, our dog goes in the boot in a crate.

@midnightstar66 I’m going to sound thick but what’s the purpose of the booster seat? Mine purely has the seatbelt - but would it be safer with the seat as well?

Girlintheframe · 03/11/2020 17:45

I have a cover that covers the entire back sea. It attaches around the headrests. Back seat still gets mucky but not as bad as if we didn't haven't it

Funf · 03/11/2020 17:49

Crate in the boot, what if the dogs, muddy etc?

midnightstar66 · 03/11/2020 17:53

@MLMbotsgoaway it keeps your seats clean and unscratched . And I guess is like a bed so a bit cosier for the dog and keeps them a bit more stable. Especially on slidey leather seats.

MLMbotsgoaway · 03/11/2020 18:09

@midnightstar66 ah gotcha. We have a cover type thing that hooks over. Might be more comfy though

Just be aware that leather seats etc can be tasty.

A friend's dog ate a leather headrest, reaching through from the boot...

We have leather seat and on a normal day, he will go in the boot but if we go further eg. holiday then we also have two kids in the back and the boot full of stuff so he goes in his normal bed between the kids and has a seat belt harness to attach him to the seatbelt. Wouldn't worry too much, just put a blanket on the seats

Many hosings-out of the boot later, I've finally resigned myself to the fact that the big hairy dog can only travel vomit-free on the rear seat of our car, clipped into the seat belt. Has anyone got any back-seat cover recommendations? Before I lose my mind completely and order the Orvis version that's nicer than most of my own coats?
