What do you feed your dog?

Dog is currently 17 weeks and has been weaned onto red mills chicken and rice kibble. I thought he would be getting used to it now but is just having horrid poos with diarrhoea and generally just farting constantly.
I had heard good things about this food, but obviously it's just not agreeing with him.

I agree have heard vets aren’t taught about nutrition and I prefer the dog food comparison sites. We use Orijen, and also loved Butternut until our dog grew bored of it. She looks healthiest on that as people asked why she was so shiny (it has unprocessed ingredients and frozen and includes flax oils etc)

Royal Canin doesn’t fare well Nutritionally I don’t think on the comparison sites and I wouldn’t chose it personally but may be wrong ...

Mine is on chappie. Recommended by my vet.

Autarky Grain Free, the best dry food I’ve come across

bloodywhitecat · 04/11/2020 21:20

Raw usually but he's in and out of foster care at the moment so we are using a cold pressed kibble instead.

Chappie for my border collie

freshfreesias I couldn’t agree more and our grandparents’ generation’s dogs had better longevity I believe , I can’t remember where I read that but it doesn’t surprise me.
I tend to add fresh food but would like to be more knowledgeable on what is good. So far I add things like tinned sardine, meat scraps (not the fat as didn’t realise for a while this isn’t good) , boiled egg, and I made a ‘pup loaf’ sometimes with turkey mince, flax seed and oats and veg from a recipe book a friend gave me!! It sounds ridiculous though very quick To make!

Our dog has Butchers wet food, he likes the tripe flavour 🤢

We put down Crave kibble and he eats it when he's really hungry or if he's done a lot of exercise.

He has a sensitive stomach and is generally fine on this.

BellaVita · 04/11/2020 22:49

Another raw complete feeder here. We use Naturaw.

TheVanguardSix · 04/11/2020 22:53

AATU dry/kibble. Best dog food ever! Excellent poos. Grin My dog loves it and it doesn't smell in the bag at all (a great sign). 80% protein. They do a puppy version.

ZiggysPFrow · 04/11/2020 22:57

Always raw

Iheartmysmart · 04/11/2020 23:00

Another raw feeder here. Swapped after poor dog had a bout of pancreatitis several years ago and he’s been fine ever since. Now nearly 10 and in really good condition and an ideal weight for his breed. I’m currently using Poppy’s but Honeys is also excellent.

butterry · 04/11/2020 23:16

Vets get commission on whatever dry food they sell so I wouldn’t trust their advice. Have a look at this website for dog food reviews. www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/the-dog-food-directory

I chose Orijen and dog is happy and healthy on it. I looked at raw but didn’t have the freezer space for it.

I think variety is important. We try to give him a few (healthy) left overs to mix it up a bit. Scrambled egg, left over chicken, the odd hot dog. I agree that we’re very precious about what dogs eat. I know we have to be careful but a few scraps added in to the mix is fine I think. As long as it’s not pizza!
