Fishy smell?...

She had her flee and worn treatment Monday so stools have been a bit looser. We have also gradually introduced a new food into her diet mixed with her normal food as hoping to switch to Forthglade as we thought it might be better quality. Shes currently on PAH Step up to naturals which she does like and seemed fine with but there wasn't much choice and forthglade seems to be more available in our supermarket. Any way her stools have been a bit looser, yellow and she has been farting more. She's just had her bath today and she smells very fishy could this be liked to her new food?? Do I switch back to her normal one or keep going?

Fishy smell especially from around the bottom is probably an issue with the anal glands.

My dog suffers from this especially when his poos are soft as normal poo helps to keep the glands healthy. If this persists you may need to get your vet to empty them (just stand back when they do it WinkGrin).

I would try and get the poo back to firm by sorting her food out. Maybe the new one doesn't suit your dog or you are trying to swop over too quickly.

Yes that's why I'm wondering although I thought it was good for sensitive tummies as has very good reviews and quality ingredients. She did have her worm and flee treatment too so could also be the cause. Maybe too much upset. She properly stinks 🤮

Can I give her some carrots or weetabic to help them firm up?

I've never given my dog weetabix but he does have raw carrots.

If she properly stinks it’s probably her glands -
they reek when they need emptying 🤢

got my Yorkie's anal glands done at the Vet just this week... she stank to high heaven and am making sure she has enough fibre/weetabix to prevent this happening again .. nothing prepared me for that smell lordy 🤢

I went to pay once at the vets and the receptionist sniffed and asked if he had had his anal glands done. He stank because the vet kind of missed the dressing and it squirted everywhere [boak]

it's putrid right enough ... we bathed the dog 4 times thinking she'd rolled in something in the garden... until we googled it ... people need to be talking about dogs anal .... jeeeeeeepers 🤣

Imanessexgirlgetmeoutofhere · 01/11/2020 16:35

It's a smell you never forget! Our westie had to have her anal glands cleared regularly and in the end the vet removed them. Metallic fish is the way I always described it.

Dread smelling it again with our puppy 🤢

BlueThistles · 01/11/2020 17:00

I didn't know they could remove them? I might investigate this for our Yorkie too ☺️

vanillandhoney · 01/11/2020 17:02

Fishy smell is anal glands.

You can do it yourself but the vets is probably the nicer option Grin

BlueThistles · 01/11/2020 17:10

I made the mistake of googling it.. I cannot unsee it 🤢

BiteyShark · 01/11/2020 17:12

One problem is my dog squirts his glands when he is frightened. Something spooked him in the night not long back and as he sleeps on the bed with his arse near me you can guess the rest Shock

nixso29 · 01/11/2020 17:14

My yorkie sometimes suffers from the dreaded "tuna butt" as we affectionately like to call her! Her groomer usually sorts it out as part of her routine groom

BlueThistles · 01/11/2020 18:36

Im so glad Im not alone with this doggy grotty botty issue 🤣

Dickorydockwhatthe · 01/11/2020 18:39

Ewww no way an I touching that 🤮 do you think it could be the switch in food? Shall I switch back? Its only been a week and I've introduced it gradually her farts stink too 😬

Is it definitely coming from her anus? I ask because there are other reasons why a dog could smell like fish, including urine infections, vaginitis and skin problems.

definitely anal glands, my boy suffers terribly from it, releases them on his own a lot when asleep. In fact he did it last week then he's been ill with diarrhea all weekend. Yesterday he pooped blood so popped him to the vet where they suspect he's leaked some puss from his anal glands and it didn't come out causing an infection. She also said the stress from all the fireworks going off could have contributed to it. In fact the vets have ran out of sadatives as so many people are needing them this year. So now we have the fun off trying to get him to take antibiotics and probiotics
