Nice looking huge dog beds

After years of faffing about it, we now have a date to have a wood burning stove installed (and nice surround, hearth etc). As we have Karndean in the sitting room, I was then looking at nice rugs to go in front of the fire, until DH pointed out that the dogs will want to lie in front of the fire, a rug won't be thick enough (ddog1 is a typical bony lurcher), and so we need a dog bed to go there. The current 160 x100cm bed is a very boring brown memory foam, and not really what I want as the focus for the room.
So, suggestions for huge, flat (or only with soft edges as they don't curl up), and nice looking beds, preferably with removable, washable covers? Or other suggestions to let the dogs lounge at least slightly photogenically

Joules do some really nice dog beds. Not sure how big they are though. I’d love to get our dog a new bed. Just waiting to make sure he has outgrown his bed destroying phase!

Depends what sort of look you’re going for really. If you want the whole, cosy woodburner, country look, Orvis beds are supposed to be very good, although £££s.

Alternatively, plainish beds with sheepskins on top for a more Hygge type thing?

Charley Chau do some lovely beds, but I think they only go up to 100x80.

CMOTDibbler · 31/10/2020 12:48

The Charley Chau ones are lovely, but too small for my lanky hounds!
The look isn't so much cosy cottage, more modern farmhouse (I'm useless at interior design stuff) so not tweedy, ideally a geometric design or nice strong colours.

Would it look rubbish if i got a rug the same size as a cot mattress, made a mattress cover in a toning material, and put the rug on the mattress so they had extra padding? Maybe even just a folded duvet under the rug, neatly attached and covered?

Tuffies mattresses? They're quite thick so not very rug-like but they last for ages, come in larger sizes and are waterproof so you can sluice them down. There's a half-decent selection of removable and washable covers, or you could make your own.

We have 3 yr old Tuffies and the mattresses show no wear at all. We've had to replace 2 covers as they got dug through. Expensive but so practical and hard-wearing that they're worth the money.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 31/10/2020 14:52

I should say that the other two covers are in v good condition.

Costco have big dog beds

This pet Fusion bed is very popular with the arthritic dog group. There is a massive one that made a greyhound in it look small. It also has replacement covers so can swap when need to wash.

I've a flat tuffies mattress but they are like a futon & quite firm so not all dogs like them.

MrsJunglelow · 01/11/2020 08:06

Do lurchers shed a lot/pick up a lot of grime?
If not, you could buy a large 4 - 8 skin sheepskin rug?
They are lovely and soft and cuddly, dogs tend to love them and they are attractive to look at.
They are unfortunately a bit of a pain in the arse to keep nice though in my experience, I have young and therefore messy children and my dog is a double coated breed and my DS and DM have asthma which was aggravated by dust trapped in the rug so it didn’t go so well for us but I think for a home without young children and sleek, non grimy, sheddy dogs they are nice.

George Barclay beds are nice. They have flat mattresses, open one side beds, or enclosed all round beds. Great for lanky dogs! Very modern farmhouse.

Derbee · 02/11/2020 03:42

We loved our George Barclay.

Seconding Tuffies

BasiliskStare · 02/11/2020 04:57

I do not have a woodburner but have two big cushions for my two with soft ( but match the kitchen colours ) blankets over the top. Blankets can go through the washing machine. Fairly aesthetically pleasing and reasonable cost. you could do the same with duvets or cot mattresses ,
in fact why not two duvets with covers folded and nice blankets over the top ?

exLtEveDallas · 02/11/2020 06:44

Orvis for sure. Expensive, but very popular m.orvis.co.uk/dog-beds

CMOTDibbler · 02/11/2020 11:15

Thanks everyone! George Barclay is currently the front runner in terms of looks and size, but still not quite right.
As the new fire is going to be the focal point of the room (and currently occupied by a very unattractive gas fire), and the dog bed has to be so big, I'd like it to be really attractive rather than just not ugly.

Lovely blankets would be great, except ddog1 is a digger of blankets, and his big saluki claws shred things. He doesn't do it to anything solid, but blankets need scuffling around apparently

This is ours. American bulldog looks tiny on it. www.alfieandlu.com/collections/frontpage/products/the-mattress-bed-light-grey

Wolfiefan · 02/11/2020 11:24

We have a single mattress. Grin definitely not pretty.

moosemama · 02/11/2020 11:51

No experience of them myself, but these people will design and make a dog bed for you.

SoddingWeddings · 02/11/2020 11:55

How about a large sheepskin (or two) on top of the dog bed?

HasaDigaEebowai · 02/11/2020 11:57

We use the DSs old cot mattress. I made a cover for it and its the perfect size for our rough collie

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 02/11/2020 13:45

Have remembered that Tuffies do a travel one:
www.tuffies.co.uk/item/33/Puppy-and-Dog-Travel-Bed/The-Puppy-Tuffie-Travel-Tuffie.html
Two sizes, choice of 7 covers.

MrsPernicious · 02/11/2020 13:55

Another vote for tuffies, nice and padded for dogs with pointy elbows.

Or an animal hide, cow or reindeer over the current mattress or a sheepskin. Our pointer has a felted sheepskin that is very comfortable, as it was made from a cotted fleece, so no sheep were harmed to make it and it is washable.

moosemama · 02/11/2020 16:23

Bright colours, big, but not geometric.
