Struggling with feeding

Puppythursday has quite frankly never seemed to like the food he was sent home with (dry food with occasional mixed in wet food). He then had a bout of vomiting and went onto chicken and boiled rice which he loves.

My problem now is the vet advised to gradually introduce his old food back after the chicken/rice and he's simply not interested. If I give him his old food he simply turns his nose up at it.

Do you think it's worth changing food all together? (I know we would need to introduce it gradually). I looked at All About Dog Food and all the brands it is recommending are raw foods for his age and size.

I'm sure he would love that more but is it worth trying dry food again?

What do you do? Puppythursday is now 11weeks

(Btw he's going back to the vet again next week for a check up so will also mention to them in case he's not eating the food because of something in it that's not agreeing with him!)

(And the dry food is softened first btw before he has it - but no matter the consistency, he just doesn't want it)

I think kibble, even soaked, is really boring for dogs.

Not a problem for very food orientated dogs but my fussy one turned his nose up at lots of different kibbles.

I suspect now your dog has realised how tasty chicken and rice is the kibble just doesn't compare.

I found good quality wet food is nice and tasty smelly. Raw wasn't an option for us so wet was the obvious choice.

Thanks Bitey. Which wet food do you use?

Puppythursday is a cocker so the smell seems really important. He can smell me boiling his chicken a mile off! I used the chicken water to soften the kibble last time and he did have a bite of it and then I think realised there was no chicken and walked off! They are no fools these dogs Grin

Haha mine is also a cocker Grin

I actually use a mix of various brands and flavours to keep it interesting.

Millies Wolfheart, forthglade, nature's menu, carnilove, aatu, butchers. He doesn't particularly like fish but likes different meats.

Mine has a chronic stomach condition but actually has no problem swopping different brands of wet food all the time as long as it's reasonable quality e.g. a good percentage of meat/fish.

I use allaboutdogfood.co.uk to compare quality versus cost.

Some of the ones I use are expensive but I alternate with some cheaper ones that are still a high meat content and he never gets bored.

Thanks that's really useful. I think I'll go and buy something new and try it gradually because he's definitely not happy with the old kibble.

I think puppy Thursday has some sort of stomach issue though I'll see what the vet says this week as it may be an allergy as he's a bit itchy too.

I’ve got a very fussy dog and we’ve got tried all sorts over the years raw , prepared raw , kibble etc and we’ve finally settled on Millie’s wolfheart kibble with Applaws pouches ( breakfast) and Applaws tins ( evening meal) He eats all the flavours but particularly likes the chicken in broth in the small tins , it’s quite expensive as he’s 15/16 kg but at least he eats it without fuss and it’s a reasonable quality . The Applaws chicken tins are the least dog foody wet food I’ve come across .

HappyThursdays · 17/10/2020 20:21

Thanks Flora, I'll look out for those. I think he's after a less dog foody food too!

PAH do the tins , I order from Zooplus though as it’s cheaper .

There are some fresh food options such as butternut box and different dog, they are both well reviewed. Half way house between raw and normal
