Help 5 week old puppy

We have just adopted a 5 week old puppy from a dog shelter . They couldn't stay in the shelter any longer and this is why we've got her while she is so young. I have had puppies before but 8-9 weeks and never had any issue with sepertion anxiety. My new little girl is obviously very young and crying all night for her siblings. I would normally let her cry it out but being so young I'm not sure this is the right path of action. Any advice for such a young girl. ? I don't want to get it wrong

I would honestly report that shelter. That's appalling that they agreed to take the puppies without Mum.

I second keep her in with you, the poor baby is tiny. Literally, she should be snuggled with her litter not all alone in the wide world.

She wants love and support and can get into a routine when she's strong enough.

Can you set up her bed in your room? Make sure she's warm enough at night as I'd say she's too small to regulate her own temperature. As for food, can you get puppy milk where you are? If not, she needs lots of fat - goats' milk would be good, I would also give her chicken thighs and rice which was what our vet always recommended as the best way to get calories into them.

OP said she's not in the UK, so reporting might not be an option. Also, the puppy is already with her and she needs to be looked after.

Thank you everyone for all the advice . I will be doing a lot of the things that have been recommended. Yes she will be in with us tonight and for as many nights as it takes . Fortunately where we live is not cold but will keep an eye on her temperature. she is snuggled up fast asleep right now. Thank you again for all your help

I fostered a pup who came to me at eight weeks but her littermates had been stolen at 4-5 weeks. The biggest issue she had was biting, and it was severe. You'll get the feeding and sleeping sorted, but will need help from other dogs with the biting.

Thank you for the heads up @fifivedogstofeed. We do have an older dog (2years) and I am hoping that she along with us will sort this biting business out. I won't put up with it. I'm a fairly strict human but with lots of praise and cuddles . Fingers crossed, so far we haven't had a wayward dog yet 😁

She's lovely.

Good luck OP.

I have bottle fed newborn pups many times, by 5 weeks, yes they need puppy biscuits soaked in water or puppy formula, I use the royal cabin referred to previously. I use microwaveable heat warmers wrapped in towels for them to snuggle into, although I normally have more than one. Good luck

I’m also not in the U.K.

She looks adorable, good luck OP. Hope your other dog can help ;)

fivedogstofeed · 18/10/2020 10:24

Oh sweet baby! Is she a setter?

1WildTeaParty · 18/10/2020 14:29

She looks so sweet :)

At five weeks she needs a mum-substitute rather than puppy-training. I agree about the warm pads.

Could you always use the same blanket/cover on your lap (or body) and wrapped around the warm pad or in her bed so that she connects it with being cuddled up with you ?

If she is used to sleeping on you AND always on the blanket, this will make transition easier for her when you are not present.

bert3400 · 18/10/2020 16:49

She is a Cocker something. Not sure what dad was . She loves her blanket and she has settled in really well. She slept from 12am to 6am last night and it was only me poking her cause I was shocked she slept so well that woke her up . This is her awake

Ellmau · 18/10/2020 17:34

I thought her head looked spanielly. So sweet.

RonaCor · 18/10/2020 19:36

Oh my goodness, very sweet. What is she called?

doodleygirl · 18/10/2020 19:45

Awwwww, she is so beautiful. Glad you got a decent nights sleep.

bert3400 · 18/10/2020 19:59

No experience with puppies but I have raised a 5 week kitten*. He needed skin to skin contact, so spent the days tucked down an oversided sweatshirt against my chest, and the nights on top of me. He's now a total thug of a cat, and is I suspect out rabbiting right now, but he still likes to sleep on top of me.

I would suggest similar. She'll need the comfort, but she'll also need you for warmth, as she won't be reliably regulating her body heat yet.

Good luck!

(*He was found in a wheelie bin surrounded by his dead littermates - I wouldn't have taken a kitten from a litter that early had there been a choice.)
