Puppy farts

My 8 month old puppy does the most disgusting farts and while his first poo of the day is solid he does very sloppy poo later on in the day. I feed him an expensive, grain free dry food but an i missing something? Should i try a different food? I give him ham or cheese when doing training and have a bag of rabbit ears for him to chew on.

I really want a) my house to not smell like a sewer and b) my grass not to be covered in sloppy poo remnants.

We had a similar problem for a while, and at about the same age. We ended up getting ours checked by the vet after 10 days of on/off upset stomach, and terrible wind. There was nothing wrong with him, and we are fairly certain that the treats we were giving him liberally for training were too rich for him. We cut those out, replacing with others, and have not had that problem again.

Thanks for that. I did wonder if it was the treats. That's an easy thing to change so maybe I'll cut out the cheese and ham and replace with chicken for a while to see if that improves the smell and consistency of his poo.

Our puppy went through a similar phase and we cut down on the treats which helped, we also changed the food around a bit and he now has Butchers tins and Crave biscuits.

We still get the occasional bad smell but its much better than it was!!

Ours turned out to be sensitive to a protein in chicken- took a while to work out as all 'sensitive ' food contains it.

The vet said this is a surprisingly common sensitivity!

Try a different food with a different protien. Ours started on Eden which just didn't work for him, we switched to millies wolfheart countryside mix and the difference was amazing within days. We think our ddog is sensitive to some fish, although salmon is ok.

We initially kept our dog on James Wellbeloved as that's what he came with from the breeder. However he used to stink at times and he poo was ok, not sloppy but not as firm as it is now.
We changed to Millies Riverside mix and he doesn't fart at all now. His poos are firm and easy to pick up. Only time he stinks now is he he's managed to eat something vile when out walking!

Brilliant thanks for all that advice. He's almost finished the 12kg bag of food so I'll buy a smaller bag of something different and see how we get on. I'm in Ireland so not familiar with most of the brands suggested but mute general theme seems to be trial and error with food
