Some of you may remember we lost our Ddog (a 14 year old Gordon setter) at the end of July. We were looking to replace her with a rescue straight away but for various reasons that hasn't happened.

So now we are looking for a puppy. Our instinct is to go for a gun dog, pointer, weimaraner type. But we have recently adopted a kitten so I gather weimaraners aren't a good idea. I've seen some dalmatians but the amount of exercise they need is putting me off (but are they really worse than setters?)

The main change in our lives since we had our last puppy (other than dcs growing up - I was pregnant with DD3 now she is 14 and her sisters are adults) is the fact that I now work part time out of the house. Most days I just work mornings but I work all day on Monday (could come home at lunchtime for a 30 minute walk).

Things we loved about Ddog, loyalty, playfulness, security (no need for a door bell and no danger of an intruder)

Things we didn't love, the hair.

So please help me find our next dog. I would go for an 'oodle of some sort but they are practically unknown in France.

Personally I would look for a rare breed, lots of nice dogs not bread for money hence becoming rare.
We have a Dandie, fab companion, skilful hunter, non shedding best dog we have had in 30 years of different breeds, loves the outdoors, but happy to cuddle up or play.

My Labrador would savage a cat given the opportunity.
Introduced a cats to my previous dogs, a JRT and a poodle and they were fine.
Whatever you get, it’ll need a very careful introduction.

If you get a rescue you may not have a breed choice. I have dogs and cats. According to popular myths my dogs should not live with cats. My dogs get along fine with them as long as they have a separate space.

I recommend my dog - best one I've ever met.

But you can't have him - he's mine Grin

(Sorry, v.unhelpful)

Update: we are seeing a litter next week. A rare - ish breed Braque d'Auvergne. A type of pointer that tends to get along well with other animals and is affectionate and good natured.

I have found a doggy day care to help with the days I work full time.

I thought of one if those as my friend has one that's always mistaken for a gsp! But couldn't think of the name. Very sweet dog

@PrayingandHoping that's good to hear, thanks.
