Can you recommend an amazing bed for an old boy?

DDog1 will be 13 next year. Until recently you'd never have known but the last few months we've become acutely aware he is in fact an old dog.

We always buy the tribe a present each at Christmas and this year we were thinking perhaps a lovely bed where he can be wistful and curmudgeonly in comfort.

We don't have loads of space so leather Chesterfield type beds are a no go. He's a lot stiffer than he used to be so nothing too high. Ideally easy to wash, but as a working dog he's always had noisy, robust "sensible" beds. Perhaps now is the time to buy something impractical and fluffy?

Not overly bothered about price (as I could likely have bought myself a decent car with what I've spent on dog beds over the years), though DH has gloomily pointed out that anytime we buy an extra large bag of food, posh collar etc for our older animals they promptly snuff it. So not that expensive he starts to get ideas Wink

Oh, should probably have said that DDog1 is a working cocker Smile

Does he like to snuggle? Ddog LOVES her cozy cave.

We have an Orvis bed that has a great base, it's about five or six inches deep and very supportive. Raised sides (three sides) so our dog can rest her head on it. Expensive but I can see it would be lovely for an old and creaky dog.

eBay for offcuts of mattress memory foam - if you get one cot sized you'll be able to get a ready made waterproof cover. So much cheaper than memory foam dog beds.

VinoEsmeralda · 28/09/2020 22:08

Can i placemark-same idea for old boy, one more nice comfy bed

EnglishRain · 28/09/2020 22:11

I've got this for my dogs, I've got a huge one and a smaller one (I have two golden retrievers and a toy breed). Base is memory foam. Covers unzip and go in the wash and come out lovely. My eldest is 12, he used to sleep on bet bed or the floor by choice but he is rather fond of these beds.

bodgeitandscarper · 28/09/2020 22:11

Ivy and Duke do nice memory foam beds. Ours quite like the cheap as chips danish design fleece mattresses (the ones designed to go in the oval plastic beds.)

Orvis beds are amazing. We have one for our boy who is nearly 10, he loves it and helps with his joints too.

Champagneforeveryone · 28/09/2020 22:21

Ooh thank you!
The nest one would be catastrophic I think as he's likely get himself in a terrible bundle in it. However DDog3 is a neurotic old sow anxious and would adore tucking herself away from the horrors of the outside world.

I think he would love the sofa type ones as he likes to lean his head on something.

EnglishRain we have that bed too for our cocker spaniel and she looks so comfy on it, rests her chin on the edge

Gingaaarghpussy · 28/09/2020 22:35

I had a mattress topper floating around and put a duvet on top of it. My 18 year old lived it until the day he died.

Gingaaarghpussy · 28/09/2020 22:36

*mutt loved it.

I got a memory foam off cut from amazon. Tried to use blankets to cover it but he would hump them into a disgusting tangled mess that needed washing all the time and then he’d try and eat the foam so I caved and bought a “the dogs bed” waterproof liner and cover to fit and it’s perfect for him. I really should have just bought the whole lot from “the dogs bed”. It would have been less hassle and the same price.

There are some wonderful beds on the Orvis site. In fact the whole catalogue is serious dog-lovers’ porn!

My dog had a lovely squashy bed from there and it was so comfortable I’d sit in it and rest my book on dog!

Champagneforeveryone > Your doggies are so lucky to have you. You're thinking of them as old age sets in. I'm sure anything you do for them will only benefit them when they're OAPs.

Your message '... adore tucking herself away from the horrors of the outside world', resonates. Our 9 year old rescue's (greyhound) safe spot is between the sofa and a radiator. He has an expensive large bed, but we hardly ever see him because he's behind the sofa. He does have a fleecy blanket and a cushion there, as we've resigned ourselves to (not really) having a dog. Our dog can still effortlessly arrive on our bed at nightime, but he's an athlete and spaniels are hunters (if I'm right?). Whatever you do, it's obvious it's all about your dog, so good for you.

Champagneforeveryone · 08/10/2020 17:38

Thank you to everyone for your recommendations. We were going to get it for Christmas but the cooler weather means we've seen a decline in DDog1's mobility (though he is otherwise still a happy chap) so we have this beauty arriving on Saturday.

In my original post I mentioned I could probably buy a decent car with what I've spent on dog beds over the years. DH has just pointed out that his first car cost less than this one bed Grin

I have that bed for my puppy. I tested it to show him that I can sleep anywhere and it was very comfy. I got the medium size for my cardigan corgi - he’s about 13kg so not that far off cocker size and it’s plenty big enough. You might find that the large is too big to snuggle on if you see what I mean.

My boy loves his dogs bed bed. The cat loves it too. The dog does not love the cat on his bed Grin

EricBlairsHair · 08/10/2020 19:49

Our Lab loves this one, cool in summer, warm in winter with a quilt on top. Meant to be good for the joints as its suspended.
Easy to clean and it's the only bed he hasn't chewed! Think ours was £26

Ahh glad you’re getting him an early Christmas present I’m sure he’ll be very happy in his new bed. Mine loves the bolsters around the sides and yes my first car also cost less than the dogs bed!

PenelopePilchard · 08/10/2020 21:09

Our spaniels share a Tuffies bed. www.tuffies.co.uk/ It can't absorb any odour so never smells, and we have a couple of the fleece liners that get washed regularly. It's a thing of beauty and comfort, they love it.

We had a similar bed to the one you've chosen but it was really poor quality and basically cheap foam with a 1cm memory foam layer stuck to the top. They led next to it rather than on it! I'd check it well before you give it to the dog............

Fluffyowl00 · 15/10/2020 22:40

I recommend the zooplus orthopaedic beds, they are quite cheap but soooo comfortable that even I like sitting in it! The mattress is like an egg box and my Irish Setter loves it
