Has anyone's dog had kennel cough?

Yesterday my lovely girl was off her food but otherwise ok.
This morning she started coughing and gagging horribly, as if she was trying to bring something up.
When I came in from work she did her usual mega greeting (very vocal) which set off a huge bought of coughing and gagging.. sounds awful.
Off the vets we went.
He couldn't look down her throat (as she wouldn't open her mouth!) but I'd already looked and there was nothing untoward..she's not a scavenger so unlikely she'd pick up anything) but she had a mildly raised temperature and quite obviously the hacking cough, so she has antibiotics and a cortisone job to try and settle it. Felt it is kennel cough or variant.
But she doesn't go to day care, or kennels or anywhere dog heavy. And she is vaccinated against kennel cough.. how can she have picked it up? Poor girl sounds awful :(

Yes - same, no idea where it came from! Horrible hacking for 3-4 days, then a bit less, then fine. Worse for you than them (unless a puppy or vulnerable health wise). A few sleepless nights, I remember. You can get vaccinated once it’s over - poor pup, hope she feels better soon.

They don’t need to be near other dogs, they can get it from contaminated objects areas where a dog has been. Do keep her away from other dogs, I always think the cough sounds like a honking noise. Hope she gets well soon 🐶🥰

Our boy, almost 5, had it when he was a year. It was really, really awful. Sleepless nights indeed. I really thought he was going to die. He took a very bad turn very quickly. Anyway, here he is, years later and I never miss a vaccination! As soon as your girl's recovered, book her in for her kennel cough vaccination, as Baybetter mentioned.

I think our dog got it from lots of playing with one particular rescue (who'd been in a shelter). They made fast friends and we were running into this dog on our daily walks. Both dogs really jumped and rolled together, playfully biting each other and having lots of very, very close contact, which is why I thought it might have been that dog who passed it onto mine. Other than that loose theory, I haven't a clue.

I think there are lots of strains of kennel cough so I imagine dogs are only vaccinated against the main ones.

Yes, our arrived from the dogs rehoming centre with it. It got much worse at night and seemed to go on forever! She lived to a ripe old age so no damage done.

Our lab had it a couple of times. Like yours he didn't go to daycare/kennels etc but still caught it.
We were told what a pp has said and that the jab only inoculates against one strain (most prevalent stain?) but like flu there are quite a few other strains.

One of my dogs had it once. I gave him honey on a spoon to ease the hacking it seemed to work.
