Puppy Sitting Help!!

I’m puppy sitting my daughters 6 month old Shi Tzu / Yorkie puppy. He’s lovely. But has an unhealthy appetite for anything he deems edible it seems.
I’ve just returned from a quick walk as he found and swallowed a chicken drumstick bone in the park. Whole.
Will he be ok, or do I need to induce vomiting to get this thing back up. I’m just concerned as to its size and the size of his intestines.......

I'm not normally someone that sings vet at the first opportunity but if this was a cooked chicken bone it can be quite dangerous as they can splinter. So I would at least call the vet. If it was raw it will be fine.

You need to phone the vets for advice. Never induce vomiting yourself, as it could cause damage coming up.

(And, yes, this is potentially serious particularly in a small breed puppy, so you really do need to contact the vet now.)

LST My gut feeling is it was cooked and had been discarded by some careless idiots after they’d eaten (think KFC or similar)
It was hard to tell. I saw him pick it up and it hanging from him mouth. By the time I’d approached him, the little tied had swallowed it so I didn’t ruin his fun.....

(Mine ate the shards of broken glass in a dropped jar of treats, so you have my full sympathy. It's amazing how quickly food can just vanish if they sense you coming to take it away.)

On the plus side, at least your daughter's puppy has done it in daylight on a working day. Mine normally pick bank holidays!

It does need vets advice but don't beat yourself up - we've all been there.

Thanks guys. Just finished a lengthy conversation with my vet. She said they don’t induce vomiting for chicken bones as could splinter. She said to keep a close eye on him for the next 24-48 hours. It should pass. They said to feed him little and often to help it go through and no strenuous exercise (but gentle walks are ok).
Any signs of him trying to be sick or lethargy and I need to take him in.
Phew!!

Motorina Oh goodness. The glass can’t have been fun?! This little monster does exactly that though. Knows he shouldn’t eat it, but as soon as I clocked him and started going to get it out he swallowed it whole.....

Hopefully it will work itself out the other end, but my brothers puppy ate a lolly stick the other month, he saw it happen, they rang vets and they said same, to keep an eye on her...unfortunately the pup started acting ill, tired etc and it had to have it surgically removed , cost nearly £1k.

Ohhhhh that's really good news! Fingers crossed it will pass naturally.

Motorina Don’t think I’ve ever looked forward to checking dog poo before! Fingers crossed it all ok.

@ILoveFlumps....she is absolutely fine know thankfully, she had only been spayed a couple of weeks before so it made it worse as she had to have another GA and operation so soon after.

Monkeytapper oh the poor thing. What a nightmare for her (and your brother). No idea how these puppies manage to swallow such large items in the first place, or why they even want to?!

I wouldn't worry my dogs have done it or more than one occasion. The kids put stuff in the bin and dont close the door ! If your dogs not unwell then they usually pass it. Watch the poop if there's any blood phone vet. If your dog is unwell phone vet otherwise don't worry.
