Grapes!

Daughter's birthday party yesterday, 5 month old lab delighted to have 7 wee girls around him.
One of them asked permission from DH to feed him a grape and he said yes! I was sure I'd read that they weren't safe so had a Google. One trip to OOH vet, emetic injection, vomited up entire grape, £200 lighter.
I'm so glad I checked but definitely a life lesson!!

Some dogs are fine with grapes and raisins. The problem is that you can't tell which ones...

You paid £50 more than me 😂 I phoned the vet and they were adamant she needed to go, raisins are worse as whatever causes the problem is made stronger.

It’s with many things 4 grapes could kill one dog and have zero impact on another.

A couple of years ago we were due to go abroad for Christmas while the dog was going off to stay with BIL and his wife. The morning of the day the dog was being dropped off I was cutting myself a piece of Christmas cake, a couple of raisins dropped onto the floor and the dog was on them instantly. Cue a frantic dash to the vet, an £80 bill and huge apologies to BIL for sending him a slightly sickly dog. To this day DD doesn’t know this happened (she was at school) because if she did she’d have spent the whole of the holiday fretting about the dog.

You did the right thing.

Some dogs can tolerate grapes, but others are deathly allergic. You never know which one yours will be, so better safe than sorry!

I had a family member with a labrador aka walking dustbin they soon worked out how to save money on vet trips by giving the dog super hot mustard to induce vomiting at-home, I wouldnt necessarily recommend that though!

Last Christmas my ddog wolfed down a mince pie. He obviously is a raisin tolerater!!

We've had the (expensive) grape run to the vet too. We also had a Thai prawn cracker run - he managed to grab and then wolf down a whole bag of Thai prawn crackers. If it had been Chinese prawn crackers apparently it would have been fine, but Thai ones contain onions and garlic. Of course they do...

That's reminded me of when my son dropped an onion ring on the floor and dpup hooves it up before we could get to it! He was fine though, must have a cast iron constitution. I remember googling how much onion was toxic for his weight!!

This. One Boxing Day mince pie vomiting session veteran here. Our vet said it's not a case of 'watch and wait' like chocolate can sometimes be, because you can estimate the toxicity vs body weight but an emergency - it causes kidney failure and by the time you see symptoms is usually too late to save the dog. She said there's no way to tell which dogs will be affected and no research possible really because you can't test on healthy animals and most people are now clued up enough to get the vomiting injection so cases where dogs die are rare enough that there's no viable testing even post-mortem to draw conclusions. A different vet once told me that they used to feed their dog grapes and were horrified when they found out in vet school that grapes and raisins were toxic!
