New puppy but terrible breath

Our 8.5 week old puppy is gorgeous but the most terrible fishy breath - far worse than our old dog. The breeder sent her home with Burgess complete puppy food and a tin of puppy wet food.

I assume it must be her diet causing the bad breath- it is herring in the food-- she is bright and seems very healthy.

Puppy food is a minefield.
Can anyone recommend good puppy food or a diet which won't give this problem?

And the latest tagline on everything seems to be 'grain free'- is that important?

Are you sure she hasn't been biting around her bottom. Anal gland issues stink of fish and if they have been trying to relief the discomfort then their breath might smell.

For food it's going to come down to personal preference. I use allaboutdogfood.co.uk to compare quality and cost.

Has the puppy been wormed properly? Bad breath is a big sign of worms.

Actually if there is herring in the food, it probably is that, especially if she is bright and full of beans (metaphorically of course or that would give you a problem at both ends!) Worms usually make them lethargic, with a dull coat and appear in generally poor health.

Chappie Original is fish based - it’s a great food for dogs but absolutely stinks.

My 19 week old puppy is on Burgess puppy food and no bad breath issues. Firm poos though (his third type of food and poos much better on Burgess) so might be worth looking into other possible causes?

My dog has always been on James Wellbeloved. Our trainer recommended it and we’ve never had a problem with it.

Biteyshark- I haven't seen her biting round her bottom, but I'll keep an eye on that.
Muttsnutts- she's been wormed with drontal 2 weekly so far- last a few days ago so it shouldn't be worms hopefully.
Owl- thanks for posting your experience of Burgess- I wonder if it could have a different effect on my pup, but it seems unlikely to be honest.

Sniffy- I've heard good things about James Wellbeloved.

I'll have a good look on the website Bitey recommended.

She had a vet check a few days ago (before I noticed the breath thing) and all was good. It's very odd- I thought puppies were supposed to have lovely breath!
