Puppy dog not cocking a leg

We've had a miniature poodle dog for a couple of weeks now, he's about 15 weeks First dog I've had for many years but has become instantly loved by the whole family. He came more or less house-trained, though we have had one or two accidents.

One thing I don't understand is that he doesn't cock a leg to pee, he squats like a female. Not complaining, just curious - will this change?

My Mum and dad's dog is 10 now and cocks his leg out on walks, but squats in the privacy of his own back garden Grin

Mine's only just learned to cock his leg this year - he's 5 Grin

My 3 lanky sighthounds (all 11 years old plus) do a type of standing squat and only cock their legs very occasionally. There is a bit of a joke in the greyhound world that the boys need to wear wellington boots on their front legs because of the way they pee. Grin

I have a sighthound fourquenelles and yes he could definitely do with some wellies!

TheVanguardSix · 17/08/2020 00:26

Mine didn't start cocking his leg until he was around 2. Don't worry.

Latest one is 6 months now and squatter but last guy was over a year old before cocking his leg which actually seemed to come as a revelation to him at the time.

filka · 17/08/2020 19:12

OK thanks to all, I'll not worry. but some interesting comments about puberty and neutering that I'll need to consider. We were advise to wait until 6 months for that, but I'm picking up that it probably needs to be later.

Mine only cocks outside the house and garden he does a kind of 2 legged lunge forward wee wee
Clearly at home on the lawn there is no need to cock it!

Kinkybutkind · 22/08/2020 09:22

Mine is three and doesn’t cock his leg, he sort of slightly extends both back legs and pees, very much like a horse would...

cherrytree63 · 22/08/2020 09:27

One of ours is around 15 now, and has always squatted to pee unless he's marking his territory.
Our terrier has never squatted, but his pee hole is not in the right place so he pees backwards lol.

TeddyBeans · 22/08/2020 09:31

My pup's 3 and has never cocked his leg to pee. Doesn't do him any harm but it's good to know he's in good company! I thought he was the only one

gonewiththerain · 22/08/2020 09:35

Some only learn to cock their leg when they see another dog doing it.

RedHelenB · 22/08/2020 22:02

Mine copied another dog as a pup and I felt ridiculously proud of him becoming a big boy!!

Tumbleweed101 · 24/08/2020 07:43

Mine was about 6/7months and he cocks for every wee - but I do have another dog.

He’s recently been neutered at 18mths and there is a definite decrease in how often he scent marks on walks. Tends to be the ‘hotspots’ now rather than on every blade of grass taller than him!

Got our dog aged 8 weeks in the January, he first cocked his leg the day DD started Secondary school in September. I cried because all my babies were growing up !!
