Does your dog retch after drinking water? Is this normal?

Hello one of my dogs (3 year old lh daschund bitch) otherwise in good health, has gone from coughing a few times after drinking water to full blown retching but not actual vomiting. We have an appt. with vet early next week but in the meantime, I was just wondering if anyone else's dog does this? Is it usual? I haven't come across it in dog's before. Our other dog has never done this for example.

Btw, it's exactly the same whether she comes in from a long walk and drinks or has an idle drink when she is resting.

My mini dachshund often coughs/mini retches after a drink too. No idea why.

Mine sometimes does but that is because he gulps it down especially after exercise.

I know she will be an itty bitty thing but can you raise her dish ? Mine does occasionally if the water is just out the tap I have raised his food bowls because he was coughing with food. Hopefully you get to the bottom of it

Sometimes - normally when he drinks really quickly. It's certainly not a daily occurrence though! Try a raised bowl.

You are right to get it checked out with a vet. Always retching after drinking is not normal. I would want an exam of the trachea to rule out any physical reasons.

Once that has been ruled out try a slow water bowl like this one

My lab does this but only after drinking a lot in one go

She's a very strange dog in all sorts of ways with an unfortunate past, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if her physical confirmation was a bit off tbh. I'll see what the vet says and get a slow water bowl in the meantime.

Meant to say, the vet might have her work cut out examining her as, owing to awful puppyhood, she is very head shy, very determined, and a master wriggler.
