Dewclaw Broken? Bleeding.

DDog fell over in the garden around 645pm and started yelping. His dewclaw is pointing the wrong way. Rang vets just as they were closing, vet advised he didn’t need emergency appointment and have an appointment for 11am tomorrow. Advised not to bandage just keep him from licking, which is easier said than done as we don’t have a cone or anything. He looks super sorry for himself, walking about fine but he keeps licking when we’re not looking and yelping. Is there anything we can do to make him more comfortable and stop him licking? Didn’t ask but guessing we shouldn’t take him on his evening walk?

My dog did this too, I couldn't clip it & just as I got vet appointment in the morning and went to load up dog up the car i noticed the nail was gone, I suspect dog probably pulled it off herself. Some inner nail was left but it didn't bleed and has been fine since.

I just want to say for future reference, when the nail breaks off and you are left with a nub make sure you maintain and keep it super short.

That dewclaw is way too long, I used to have my dogs roughly that length and she broke/split them all the time.

Since keeping them as little nubs she has never injured them since.

I’m aware the nail is too long, but thank you for the input. He is a rescue we’ve only had a short while, and very very nervous, wouldn’t let us near his feet for ages we’ve only just been able to trim a couple of his nails and fur in between paws. He’s terrified of the vet to so hopefully they can do something

Would the vet be willing to cut both dewclaws super nubbin short under and send you off with some painkillers maybe?

Dewclaws are difficult for a fearful dog that won’t let you trim because they don’t contact the ground so wont get worn down by walking.

When this happened to my dog the vet just snipped it off with no anaesthetic. The vet said she could give a local anaesthetic but the risks of doing so far outweighed the benefits of a quick painful snip that lasted literally a second.

I have heard it said that cutting the quick is like chopping the tip of your finger off!
Immensely painful!
Whenever I have (accidentally) quicked my dog or tugged a very loose hanging dewclaw off (this used to be a regular injury!) she’s bitten at it and licked at it on/off for hours so presumably it is indeed very painful.

Been to the vet. Chopped off broken claw and gave injection for pain killers and sent us home with pain killers too. Dopey boy is happier as ever watching the world go by in the garden now. Other dewclaw is luckily shorter and we did manage to trim that one a week or so ago. Been working a lot on desensitising his feet, he’s ok with back paws just very wary of us being near his front ones still.

I’m so proud of him though, the last time he was at the vet was during lockdown (we got him just before in Feb) and he was barking and lunging when the vet came out (we couldn’t and can’t still go inside) but today he was excitedly wiggling to see vet ... I saw him put the brakes on when the door was shutting but he’s come a long long way in that time.

Oh no! I can imagine how powerful some dogs kicks are. I know his is when he's trying to push us off the sofa!! We did buy a dremel type thing, but the noise (even though it's quite) set him off. I've found a lot of patience and clippers have been a lot better. We also bought trimmers for his fur in between his pads but he won't even be in the same room as it fine with scissors though.
