This is Fred. He's 18 today.

Just that. The most wonderful, gentle, sweet natured boy that ever was and he made it to his milestone birthday. I'm so proud of him!

He's deaf, blind and rather demented now but still loves his food and trots around on his daily walk. I'm so grateful he's still my best friend.

OP, do you have any tips in terms of Fred’s diet & lifestyle? I’d love to know how you’ve kept him so healthy and happy.

My niece has a cocker spaniel (we think purebred but missing an eye) that she found abandoned ; he is about 18 now. Every time she includes him on Facebook I am stunned he's still just chilling thru life. Some dogs are amazing!

Fred is indeed a Jack Russell. A very tall one, with other stuff in there, but yes.

@Patriciawentworth tbh Fred has been rather spoiled of late (and a really fussy eater....). He tends to eat tuna, chicken, the odd bit of ham or steak. He may deign to accept a tub of Cesar now and again. He doesn't have too many teeth left and tbh my attitude now is - if he likes it he can have it!

@Patriciawentworth sorry just seen the rest of your question. In terms of lifestyle - just to recognise when he wants to slow down. He went from 2 to 1 walk at age 14-15 but we were still out for an hour. Then least year he got much slower. We still walk every day, for around 30-45mins. Lots and lots of sniffs, much slower now but he still gets stroppy if he doesn't go out.

Amazing! My 14yo lab is deaf and blind-ish and just does the garden these days - she really struggles any further. She’s happy as Larry and spends all day scavenging around the house and being completely thrilled when she finds people instead though. As long as she’s happy, we’re happy. We lost our 13yo lab to osteosarcoma two months ago. Poor boy.
