Taking new puppy away

We are picking up new puppy on Sunday and thinking of taking him away with us at the end of August but am unsure whether this would be too much for him. He would be 13 weeks when we would go.

Depends where you are going I suppose... If it's holiday accommodation then I wouldn't, he won't be reliably toilet trained and you could end up with a hefty accidental damage bill. Also will he be vaccinated and able to go out by then? If it's something like your own second home, or maybe even your own caravan at a push then I would take him.

I would not. Puppies thrive on routine, and structure. You will have just established this, and taking pup away will set back any training, and potentially cause distress. Depending on the individual's maturity stage, they might also still be in the "fear of the new" stage (8-12w typically)

Personally i would not take him. I would be getting the dog into a routine at home and toilet trained.

Contrary to others opinions, I'd take him. You're already going I assume. Our trainer takes her pups on holiday before 16 weeks. It's a great way of socializing them. As long as you can keep the routine going in a new place and they're fully vaccinated, it'll be a great experience for the pup. There's a few on the puppy survival threads who have or are going to take pups on holiday soon.

I would be worried about the puppy chewing something and peeing and pooing inside as they unlikely to be fully toilet trained and even when watched fully it's hard to avoid accidents.

I can tell you my puppy at that age wouldn't have made for relaxing a holiday,

We took ours away just before he turned six months old and he was fine then, but I wouldn't have done it at 12 weeks.

At that age, he'll be having accidents and doing things like chewing the furniture. Would you be willing to pay the costs of replacing carpet or flooring if your puppy pees or poos inside, or chews the leg of a chair or sofa?

Plus, puppies thrive on structure and routine. If it's your own home or caravan then by all means give it a go, but I don't think it's fair to take a toilet training puppy to someone else's home. Lots of places do say "no puppies" as well, so worth checking the small print just in case.

An issue for me would be exercise. Puppies sleep a lot (or should do!) Long days out with a puppy could be a problem. They should also have limited exercise and would not be able to be walking about all day. Hot days out and about could be hard to manage with a puppy.

I guess it depends on where you are going, staying or planning on doing each day.

It is a holiday let or similar.? I would be very worried about damage

I'm not sure where you are going but many places won't allow puppies or dogs under a certain age.

Mines coming to the caravan with me in a few days at 12 weeks old. She’s pretty good with her house training but it’s my own caravan so any accidents aren’t the end of the world. Her jabs have kicked in and she has a sling she goes in so she can come on long walks. My other dogs also came away from being very young and they’re well adjusted and see the van as their home as well .

It depends on where and how far 'away' is?
