All I hear is don't buy rescue but it's an impossible task.

Can't have other animals.
Must have another dog
No children under 14 (youngest is 12and a half.

Any advice?

I'm starting to think a pup will be the only way which is very sad.

Remember that those who have poor experiences adopting from rescues are more likely to complain on the internet than those who've adopted successfully which can make the balance seem to be tipping towards the "omg it's so difficult" when in fact, it's the other way because those with happy easy adoptions don't need to hit the internet to write about it. They just make their dog its own Instagram page and crack on.

Every rescue's best interests are focused on the dog's needs. They don't owe potentially adopters dogs. They may often be overly cautious but for good reason, better to be cautious than have a dog bite everyone in the house and kill all the other small pets out of nowhere and the rescue then gets the blame.

Demand at rescues at the moment is absolutely mental for dogs of all ages. Intake has actually dropped off so meeting demand is even harder, especially with "easy to rehome" dogs. Lockdown has meant a lot of people who may otherwise have handed over their dog has found they can keep them afterall, at least for now. Situation WILL change when some kind of "normality" resumes. I've already seen a lot of young dogs being sold on freelistings because owners are "going back to work". A lot more people are selling their dogs for cold hard cash rather than handing into rescue as well.

It may take months to find that perfect dog in rescue. Don't give up.
