Dog ate a grape

Hi,

I'm waiting for the vets to call me back so please don't just suggest calling the vet.

I'm totally freaking out and wonder if anyone has any positive stories or knows more than me.

He is only a little dog, bit bigger than a maltese. He ate a grape yesterday lunch time which he nicked from our picnic. He has been absolutely fine until about an hour ago when he started compusively eating grass and throwing it back up. He is off his food and is definitely feeling sorry for himself, quite lathargic.

As I say i have called the vets and am waiting for a call back.

Is he going to be okay? I've stopped googling as its terrifying!

I am no medic but I would have thought the dog would have reacted before 24 hours of eating the grape. But I could be talking bollocks.

Also I understood that not all dogs find grapes toxic but it is impossible to tell which are.

Fingers crossed he is ok - let us know how he is and what the vets say. It is horrid when they are ill

Our dog used to eat grapes (back in the 1980s when grapes' ill effects on dogs were less well known) with no apparent problems. She also ate chocolate. She was big, though - a labrador.

Through all the googling I have seen info that suggests exactly what you said and also the exact opposite. I havent heard from the vets yet. I might ring them again....poor little boy is feeling very sorry for himself!

I normally wouldnt worry since it was only one, its just with him being sick and pretty lathargic now....

Probably better waiting for the vet, than mn Smile.

Our late very big dog loved grapes. Some can even eat chocolate, for others it's really bad.

I just asked dd (vet student) she would expect a quicker response to toxins, apparently it's kidney function you might worry about.

Wait for vet call, and best of luck.

I did a first aid course run by a locum vet and unfortunately unlike chocolate the quantity of grape toxicity is not a formula.

We were told one grape can cause problems but equally some dogs can eat a bunch and suffer no effects. You just don't know.

You have done the right thing OP by contacting the vets. Fingers crossed the sickness is just a coincidence and your dog is ok.

A single raisin or grape can cause problems as there is no minimum toxic dose in sensitive individuals. They cause kidney failure so it takes at least 24 hours for the clinical signs to develop. Your vets are likely to suggest blood samples and at least 24 hours of intravenous fluids.

I think that the issue with grapes is that lots of dogs are severely allergic to them. So some dogs could eat lots of grapes and be fine, some dogs could eat one and be very sick.

I might be talking absolute rubbish though. Hopefully your vet will be in touch soon to put your mind at rest.

Tbh had I not gone on that course I wouldn't have known just how bad one grape could be so (easier said than done) please don't be too hard on yourself.

Our dog ate a full punnet.
The cat pushed it off the shelf in the kitchen where the fruit is sat out of reach to prevent the dog getting it!
(Needless to say the cat does not like the dog)

She needed an injection to make her vomit then charcoal solution to take for a week but was fine after that

He is staying over night in the vets for 24 hours of IV fluids and they are doing blood tests. should have the results of the bloods in the next couple of hours so keeping everything crossed he is ok. Feel bloody awful, he is an awesome dog and has got me through lockdown!

Hope all is well, Halloumi. Our bloody dog loves grapes and raisins (she can pounce on a dropped bit of sticky bun faster than lightning), so she's a frequent flyer at the nearest vet. PetPlan probably hate us by now.

I stopped buying grapes and mince pies at Xmas for the first two years after getting BiteyDog. I do now have grapes but cut them up and eat them only when he is in another room as I am paranoid about it.

Any news OP?

I had no idea grapes were bad for dogs until recently. I used to give some to my puppy. I retesting my, although he eats absolutely anything, he wasn't keen on the grapes but found them much fun to play with. No doubt that in the process he crushed some and ate part of it if not all.

He was never I'll and again wouldn't have known they were bad for him if I hadn't read it somewhere on the internet.

My dog is small and I dread to think how many 1 grapes she’s had over the years. I wouldn’t have even connected to two to be honest!

She has been made to vomit on at least 3 occasions for chocolate consumption though. The fool.

Hope your dog feels better soon. Did you check her all over for tics?

Grapes are funny one, some dogs can eat a bunch and be 100% fine, others can eat one and get sick. Theirs no way to tell in advance how your dog will react. Fingers crossed your little guy is fine op.
Definitely don't feel guilty everyone's dogs eat something they shouldn't at some point one of mine (labrador) is a regular at the local vet for various dodgy meals, usually involving some rotting wild animal shes found

It might have nothing to do with the grape.
I had a dog who ate a whole roast chicken just out of the oven once. Another time a display box of creme eggs! He had an iron stomach I guess. My current dog ate a pickle yesterday. She asked for another 😁.

Had never heard dogs couldn't have grapes, hope they're ok. I think it is lucky you spotted it.
