Bringing new pup home

We are picking up our new pup soon and have been thinking about how we should bring him home in the car. It could be up to a 3 hour journey and we are aware that legally dogs should be 'restrained or tethered in a car. However we are also conscious that we will just have taken him away from his mum and would love to wrap him in a blanket on my knee. How did you bring your puppy home?

I had an ezydog attachment that the seatbelt goes through. Then plugged myself in and attached pup to the attachment. I now use it all the time for her own seat attached to her harness.

Very exciting, there is lots to learn on the puppy survival threads here.

What breed is he/she? I only clicked in because your title interested me as we are bringing out 8 week old puppy home in 3 weeks but it’s walking distance...

Breed and a size matters really, I’d think a seat harness resting on mum and siblings blanket and lots Of toilet breaks?

DW held JuiceyPup on her lap on blankets when we bought him home. He'd never worn a collar or lead so we just went with what felt right for us.

Now he uses these attached to his harness:

Which are fab. There's two in a pack so we have one on the back seat and one on the front.

We went on the train, DH carried her and she was on the table/chairs/mine & DH lap in the train carriage

Oooh we pick up our puppy in a few weeks. I’ve just ordered the ezydog attachment, it looks great!

I had a 4 hour drive alone with my puppy, he went in a crate on the front seat so I could talk to him. It kept him safe although he did scream for the first 2 hours! The last 2 hours he slept which was bliss.

Crates are the safest and cosiest way to travel pups in my experience, you can cover the crate with a blanket to make it into a den. And if they have an accident it's easy to clean up and replace with spare bedding.

We collected our puppy 4 weeks ago from north Wales and we live down south.
We popped him in a crate on the back seat of the car. It was all so new to him and he was sick within the first hour but coped really well.
Once we got to the less windy roads it was better for him and now he is fab in the car

We brought ours home in a deep plastic box lined with layers of towels and bin bags. We had a 40 minute drive and I swear he vomited more than his body weight every 10 minutes. Clean up was easy because I could lift him up with one hand and lift off the soiled bedding with the other.

Three hours would be a long time to travel with clothing coated in puppy puke.

We had a half hour drive when we picked up our puppy last week. He was already used to wearing a collar at the breeders so we swapped to our own collar and lead. He sat on several layers of towels on my lap and I was able to hold the lead firmly. I sat in the back of the car. We covered the seats and footwell with bin bags and newspaper just in case. I wouldn’t have wanted to travel much further with a puppy on my lap and he now travels in a crate/dog box in the boot when we go out.

We have car seats for our dogs, they're basically fabric boxes (with strong sides) that hang off the headrest, with a clip inside to attach to the dogs harness. Absolutely love them! Keeps the dogs contained and if they have an accident or are sick it's not gonna go all over the car seat. Got them on amazon
