Giardia

I posted the other day about food because our puppy had been quite poorly.

Vet rang tonight and he has giardia. I messaged the breeder and the response heavily suggested they knew. I'm so annoyed that they knew and didn't make contact when they already knew he was poorly because I told them.

Anyway - the point of my post is how do I best sanitise the garden and house? I was thinking cut grass low, jet wash. Jet wash pathways and decking. Bleach floors, wash bedding and soft toys, give him a bath. Repeat process weekly until he is clear?

Keep kids away from grass etc also. Anything else I should be doing?

Poor puppy :( And yes, the rest of the litter and any other dogs at the breeder's possibly have it as well. It can come back, even after you've treated it.

I had a foster pup with giardia. Agree with washing all the bedding etc. I don't think there's much you can do about the grass but certainly bleach or veterinary disinfectant on the floor and outdoors. The issue with bleach is you need to avoid the puppy walking in it as much as possible. None of the other dogs in my house were infected thankfully.

Please report the 'breeder' for selling a puppy that hasn't been treated for parasites and has most probably been kept in horrible conditions.

I will report to kennel club tomorrow. The conditions weren't poor from what we saw but its the neglect to tell us and lies when I've spoken to them.

I had a pretty lengthy chat with our vet and he's already been on panacur which stops tomorrow. He'll start antibiotics tomorrow too.

I didn't actually mean bleach, its a pet friendly cleaner and antibacterial spray and liquid I have.

Thank you for your reply 💗 hope you're wee foster pup is in a loving home now. Our last was a rescue and just perfect. We lost her at the start of lockdown. I was so devestated. This gorgeous wee pup was a happy coinicidence.

Suspect the Kennel Club won't be particularly interested unfortunately.

If it was a licensed breeder then your local council need to be informed. I'm guessing you weren't given details of when the puppies were wormed?

An eight week old puppy would not have contracted giardia unless he has been kept in unsanitary conditions. It's entirely preventable.
I have seen giardia first hand when the pups were allowed to free range on a sheep farm and another time when they had spent their lives in a stinking dark shed filled with damp straw.

We have details of their worming but it wouldn't have been effective against giardia. What we saw was clean and well maintained but obviously things can be cleaner up when expecting visitors etc.

We are in different council areas but i will contact their council today also. Thanks.

There are dog safe detergents you can use, but if in doubt you can clean floors and let them fully dry before you let the dog back onto it. It's likely other puppies in the litter will be infected too, it's so hard to get rid of.

Poor puppies, there will be so many bad breeders around cashing in on the pandemic and puppy demand.
